Thanks for the response. Is there a way I can install the dev packages for
the existing packages already installed?

Older versions of those libraries are all shipped with Ubuntu and used by a
great many packages on a typical system.  It's not a good idea to just build
your own replacements and add them to the library search path.  The other
software on your system was never tested with the newer versions of those
libraries.

On any reasonably modern Linux system, you shouldn't need to build any of
the libraries that OpenSlide depends on.  Just install their -dev packages
and build OpenSlide.
