openslide on Ubuntu

Hi, 

Recently I tried to install openslide on Ubuntu 10.04 and 12.10. In both the
situations after installing the required packages and openslide it works
fine then. However, when I restart the Ubuntu will not load the UI. The CLI
(Ctrl+Alt+F1) still works. Do you guys know any known issues with the
following required packages and Ubuntu? The following packages and their
versions are used for installations. 

cairo-1.10.2
glib-2.34.1
jpegsrc.v8d
libffi-3.0.11
libxml2-2.7.2
openjpeg-1.5.1 
tiff-4.0.3
zlib-1.2.7
