You can definitely get OpenSlide to compile on Eclipse but that is not
the problem here. Eclipse has its own configuration files and again
you would have to maintain those.

So the only painless solution is in fact to completely drop support of
systems which do not support Autotools. Anything else would require
the devs to maintain multiple build systems and this seems out of the
question - besides the other reasons Benjamin mentioned, as e.g. VC's
CL being a C++ compiler and not a C99 compiler.
