Just a followup, I would suggest starting with writing the backend code
to read these files using the existing read_region interface.

You may need to create a "multi-tiff" ops backend to support slides that
contain multiple TIFF files. Then modify the try_aperio code to read afi
files and load as multi-tiff. A bonus would be for the existing aperio
code to reject svs files that are known to only exist as part of afi
(possibly from the TIFF metadata).

Once that's working via the existing API, we can come up with new calls,
including possibly a new open() call that is required for opening
non-RGB images.

Also, we are happy to accept code written by others, as long as it is
your code and you submit it under LGPLv2.
