Holger,

1.1.9 will *not* work with MySQL 5.  There are quite a few changes in
the current CVS version that make it work against MySQL 5.  We just
converted to MySQL 5 at CMU about a month ago.  (Long overdue...)

Some of the mysql 5 incompatibilities may be causing the permission
checks to fail, resulting in the failures you are seeing.

I could put a 1.1.10 release candidate up on the web site if that
would be easier for you then using the version from CVS.  I believe
the only thing holding up a 1.1.10 release at this point is updating
the documentation.
