Solved.

I was pushing sync_client to a cyrus replica server which had a 
different version of the libc driver to the master imap server.

/var/log/messges logged this
kernel: sync_client[31071]: segfault at 0 ip 00007f03e729457f sp 
00007fffc35ebf88 error 4 in libc-2.12.so[7f03e7161000+18a000]
