squatter exits with "fatal error: Virtual memory exhausted" on huge mailbox

I monitored the process like this:

# while true; do grep VmSize /proc/16815/status; sleep 1; done;

The last lines are:

VmSize:	 2453772 kB
VmSize:	 2454608 kB
VmSize:	 2454608 kB
VmSize:	 2454884 kB
VmSize:	 2192664 kB
VmSize:	 2192664 kB

Of course it's possible that it then tried to allocate one huge chunk, but 
I can't see that. Are there better tools to monitor the memory allocation 
of a process?
