Gawd, I'd not thought of that (and I was looking at the number of  
IMAP per connections per client only the other day, in another  
context).  Thanks for your other suggestions: I shall go away and  
have a serious think about it.  Nomadic use is my key requirement: my  
daughter, for example, wants to access my webmail service from  
school, and that's a case I'm worried about.  There are all sorts of  
semi-legitimate and illegitimate reasons why a computer used by an 11  
year old at school might have a keylogger on it.
