Done, and replication is re-established.

I'll try to replicate the problem without users breathing down my  
neck (ftel.co.uk has 1000 users, batten.eu.org has six, but they're  
my parents, my wife and my children), but I suspect it's some horrid  
combination of elderly libraries misbehaving.
