Sorry for picking up this old thread again,but with the latest 
thunderbird  I don't have this problem.
I copied my 2.3.7 imap directory to an other machine and did an upgrade 
to 2.3.8.  I didn't have any trouble with deleting emails.
(I did dump/restore the mailboxes db file because I was using different 
db files though).
