unexpunge broken?

in cyrus-imap 2.3.7,  when unexpunge can't open the mailbox meta  
files or
when it can't open & lock the cyrus.expunge file it logs:

"unable to open/lock mailbox (null)"

What exactly is the error message that you are seeing?
