Mailbox Administration issues

Hello All,
 Can I create mailboxes like firstname.lastname that is using a "."
character in the mailbox? or Do I create a user name with that name
and somehow map to a mailbox folder called firstnamelastname ?

Second some of my cyrus users are saying that they are not able to
receive email if capital letters are used that is FirstName at domain.com
is not the same as firstname at domain.com the mailboxes seem to be case
sensitive, should it happen this way ? if not what can I do to sort
this out?
