Have you enabled use of "/" as the hierarchy separator? By default, "." 
is the hierarchy separator for mailbox namespace, thus 
"firstname.lastname" would be interpreted as folder "lastname" of folder 
"firstname".

Set "unixhierarchysep: yes" in your imapd.conf file.
