saslauthd woes

I'm trying to install Cyrus 2.2.5 with authentication via saslauthd (using 
pam_ldap).  saslauthd is running fine, and testsaslauthd works as 
expected.  In my imapd.conf, I have the following...

allowplaintext: yes
sasl_pwcheck_method: saslauthd
sasl_saslauthd_path: /state/mux
sasl_mech_list: LOGIN PLAIN

When I try imtest, I get the following...

S: A01 NO no mechanism available
Authentication failed. generic failure
Security strength factor: 0

In my authentication log I see...

Sep 9 17:21:39 imap[15272]: [ID 702911 auth.debug] could not find auxprop plugin, was searching for '[all]'
Sep 9 17:21:39 imap[15272]: [ID 702911 auth.error] unknown password verifier
Sep  9 17:21:39 imap[15272]: [ID 702911 auth.notice] Password verification failed

The same is true for pop3test.  It seems to me that imapd is not evening 
trying to use saslauthdb.  What am I doing wrong?
