all processes fail with signal 9

I have been using version 2.1.13 without problems but need the username rename 
facility, so I have tried to install 2.2.3 and everything started by master fails 
with "signaled to death by 9".  For example, in the log:

... master [12403] [ID 392559 local6.debug] about to exec /usr/cyrus/bin/ctl_cyrusdb
... master [12402] [ID 970914 local6.debug] process 12403  exited, signaled to death 
by 9

I added --with-mboxlist-db=berkeley --with-seen-db=flat when running configure and 
everything else was the same as when I built 2.1.13 and produced no build errors.

Can anyone offer an explanation, or at least give me some idea as to how to diagnose 
what it wrong?
