AFAIK LMTP callouts will allow you to perform online quota checks.
[ cyrus will return 4?? or 5?? error code in response to "RCPT TO:" depending 
on cyrus configuration ]

I thought about making sendmail use a perl daemon as "socket map protocol" to 
"LMTP callout" converter.
