It means LMTPd crashed in the middle of an APPEND (the segfaults you're
seeing). If your MTA is sane, it will redeliver.
The patch that avoids dropping these won't necessarally work in this case,
it only works if an unexpected fatal() happens.
Can you get a backtrace of one of the core files?
