Another guess is that you didn't actually have that disk
mounted for a month, and all of the mail is in the
directory that is now the mount point (although you
probably would have noticed the lack of old messages); when
you re-mounted the disk after the reboot, it hid the files
and presented the old data.  Unmount that disk and see what
is in that directory.
