Samba services are the only thing that work at the present.  I do have
saslauthd with PAM.  I did create a config file in pam.d  It follows:

linux:/etc/pam.d # cat saslauthd
auth    required        /lib/security/
auth    sufficient      /lib/security/
auth    sufficient      /lib/security/  likeauth nullok
auth    required        /lib/security/

account sufficient      /lib/security/
account required        /lib/security/

password required       /lib/security/ retry=3
password sufficient     /lib/security/ nullok use_authtok md5
password required       /lib/security/

session required        /lib/security/ skel=/etc/skel
session required        /lib/security/
session required        /lib/security/
linux:/etc/pam.d #

Is saslauthd set to use PAM?  Does it's PAM configuration use
pam_winbind?  Do other servies than Samba work?
