Mozilla Mail and authentication

  I've been trying to get Mozilla-Mail working.  I provide the correct
password when it asks for it but the login never succeeds and the only
things in the log are:

I checked saslauthd, cyrus-master, postfix master, all the process seem
to be running ok.

Also when using 'imtest' such as:
imtest -a cyrus -u webmaster.mydomain.com -m plain localhost

I see this response:

C: A01 AUTHENTICATE PLAIN
S: A01 NO no mechanism available
Authentication failed. generic failure
Security strength factor: 0

The only way I can get it to work is with:
imtest -a cyrus -u webmaster.mydomain.com -v -m plain -t '' localhost
S: C01 OK Completed
C: S01 STARTTLS
S: S01 OK Begin TLS negotiation now
starting TLS engine
setting up TLS connection
SSL_connect:before/connect initialization
...
S: C01 OK Completed
C: A01 AUTHENTICATE PLAIN
Please enter your password: 
S: A01 OK Success (tls protection)
Authenticated.
Security strength factor: 256

So does this mean that the only way that Mozilla Mail client will work
is with TLS?  I'm not quite understanding what's going on with this
authentication.
