trouble with auths on cyrus imap

I tried your suggestion.  I added to pam.conf

imap    auth    required        pam_unix.so                  
try_first_pass
imap    account required        pam_unix.so
imap    password required       pam_permit.so
imap    session required        pam_permit.so

still can't authenticate.
