The changes from previous releases are basicly "fix buffer overflows".
SSL support has not been added. There are some minor other bugfixes (a
memory leak, and a free() of something on the stack) in the 1.7 release.
The 1.6 / 1.7 difference is the same as its always been: SASLv1 vs SASLv2.
