It works great! What you're talking about is
Cyrus-IMAPd->saslauthd->ldap, means without PAM. I'm doing it with PAM
and it doesn't matter that OpenLDAP is compiled against SASL v1. In fact
I could use almost any LDAP server on any operationg system to do
authentication. There may be some overhead using PAM but I just like the
flexibility it gives you. You can use /etc/shadow, NIS, LDAP, MySQL or
whatever you have a PAM module for and you can even use a combination of
those different methods.
