The problem has been resolved.  It took me some time, I think because I
was led astray by the installation instructions.  My situation is a bit
obscure, as most people seem to be using saslauthd, and I will likely
move to that myself.  However, in my current configuration using
auxprop, I mistook the example file in install-configure.html:


     configdirectory: /var/imap
     partition-default: /var/spool/imap
     admins: curtj abell
     sasl_pwcheck_method: saslauthd

to mean that I could put the rest of my SASL configuration in there
too.  Silly me, I needed a /usr/lib/sasl2/Cyrus.conf.

I suggest adding a simple note to step #4 saying something like "if you
have special configurations to give to SASL, put them in
/usr/lib/sasl2/Cyrus.conf".   It could save some people a lot of time
and frustration.
