I would expect it to, since Mac OS X *is* UNIX.

Yep, just Googled it - a whole 10 seconds to verify that Mac OS X supports
pam.

Your either have not compiled saslauthd with PAM support, or libpam is
not present.
I don't know Mac OS X, (my last version was 7.2), so I don't know
wether Mac uses PAM at all, but I doubt it.
