unknown authentication mechanism: pam on mac os x build

Hi there,

Sorry to burden this list with such a basic question, but I've had a  
good go at trying to find an answer (this list might also be  
interested to learn that the web based interface to any of the  
archives isn't working either. :-P).

Anyhow, I'm using Mac OS X.4.10 on x86 and I've built cyrus- 
sasl-2.1.22. This is what I've done:

./configure
sudo make install
mv  /usr/lib/sasl2  /usr/lib/sasl2.apple
ln -s /usr/local/lib/sasl2 /usr/lib/sasl2
/usr/local/sbin/saslauthd -a pam

I then get the following returned:

saslauthd[29519] :set_auth_mech   : unknown authentication mechanism:  
pam

I'm sure that I've missed something in the above build, but I'm at an  
absolute loss to determine what. Can anybody help?
