Doing saslauthd -d showed me this on the working system:

saslauthd[18264] :do_auth : auth success: [user=test] [service=smtp]
[realm=] [mech=pam]
saslauthd[18264] :do_request : response: OK

While the other system's saslauthd didn't do anything. Strange...but
that's clearly why it can't validate the user.
