The reference to deprecated operation in 
/docsrc/imap/reference/admin/sop/replication.rst, (line 172 in my checkout):

This is in the general discussion on configuration of a replica server.  
I think this is correct for a typical replica, just not for a backup 
server, whose configuration is discussed elsewhere, 
/docsrc/imap/reference/admin/backups.rst.
