DOTCHAR in mailbox name

 Hello,
 In my setup I have "unixhierarchysep" set do "disabled". My question
 is -- is it safe to patch Cyrus-IMAP (I guess imap/mboxname.c should
 be altered) to allow DOTCHAR ("^") and add it to the list of allowed
 symbols? I do not understand from sources why Cyrus converts "/" and
 dots and DOTCHARs back and forth only if namespace->hier_sep ==
 '/'?
