Saturday lake trip, OSU comp for veterans Message-ID: Dear dance friends, Sorry for so many emails this week; I promise it will be down to 1.5 average per week after this week. Thank you to everyone who came to rush; we are incredibly grateful that you came and brought such energy and enthusiasm. *LAKE ARTHUR TRIP:* On Saturday, we (myself and Rachel Keeler) are planning a ballroom trip to Lake Arthur for the day to kayak, paddleboard, sail, grill food, eat and be merry. We are inviting anyone from our club, new or veteran, to attend. Please message me or email me (message preferred if you have Facebook) if you would like to attend; the price is $20 to cover canoe rentals and food. Car space is limited so let me know soon; if you have a car to volunteer to drive people please also let me know. We will depart from Pittsburgh at 11am leaving from campus, and return when people in your car are tired (cars can shuffle as needed). We will be grilling all manner of burgers, veggie burgers, and more. *OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY COMPETITION:* *https://www.dancesportosu.com/comp-info * This competition is on September 11, and will last only 1 day. I would like to see if some of our veteran members would like to attend together to support their team as it is good to support our region's competitive ballroom scene. If you would like to attend but have no partner at the moment, message or email me promptly. The deadline was extended till this Saturday just for us. It will be a small competition but it should be fun to dress up again and do what we used to do so often. -- Mat?as Jonsson B.S. Ballroom Dance Club is back this Fall with our weekly dance lessons, social nights, competition trips and more!! Weekly Lessons Schedule: In response to the AMAZING turnout at our recruitment events, we have altered the schedule slightly to better accomodate our new dancers! *Newcomer lessons will now start at 7:40 PM!* This is different than previously advertised, but it will remain the same for the rest of the semester. Please review the complete schedule below. After that, lessons are *$40 for students *(regardless of grade and/or school) and *$80 for non-students* for the entire semester. Please bring cash or a check made out to "CMU Ballroom Dance Team". Payment of lessons signs you up as a Ballroom Dance Club Member, enabling you to attend any lessons, come to socials, and be subsidized for competitions throughout the semester! *Levels and Auditions:* The club will not be holding auditions this semester. For the professionally taught Advanced, Intermediate, and Newcomer lessons, we recommend people *brand new to ballroom dance to attend the Newcomer level*. Dancers around a *Bronze level should attend the Intermediate* lessons, and dancers* Silver and above should attend the Advanced level*. If you feel like you fall between two levels, we recommend you attend both classes for the first two weeks to see which is better suited to your level, and stick with that one for the rest of the semester. *Styles:* You will notice that our lessons are split into four different styles of dancing. *International Standard* and *American Smooth* lessons take place on Mondays (Tuesday this week). These are the "princess" dances including waltz, tango, foxtrot, quickstep, etc. They move around the floor, stay mostly "in-frame", and are performed with long ballgowns. *International Latin* and *American Rhythm* lessons take place on Wednesdays. These are the "sassy" dances including chacha, rumba, jive, swing, samba, etc. These are more stationary, use more "hand-holds", and are performed with short skirts. *We teach all four styles* and encourage our dancers to take advantage of this variety! *Shoes & Attire:* You do not need anything special to come dance! You will see many dancers wear various types of ballroom specific shoes and/or attire. These things will be available to borrow and/or buy later in the semester. For now, we ask that you *please wear athletic/comfortable shoes and clothes*. Sandals fall off, and jeans restrict movement. Both are highly discouraged. Some of our professional instructors may prefer that you dance in socks, so be ready for that if you are comfortable. *Partnering:* As always, *no partner or experience is necessary*! We encourage everyone to rotate partners and get to know everyone throughout each lesson! For more advanced dancers interested in competing with a dedicated partner, we encourage you to attend lessons and start talking to people! We will do our best to assist with partnerships, but there is no formal partnering process. As always, our primary goal is for everyone to be comfortable and have fun! Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns! Hope to see you all on the dance floor! See more info below. *Gender Roles: *Over the past couple of weeks, we recognize that misunderstandings regarding "male" and "female" roles have made several members of our community uncomfortable. We want to offer our apologies and provide some context in an effort to create a more welcoming environment for everyone. Historically, ballroom dancing partnerships were recognized to be between a man, as the leader, and a woman, as the follower. Although the community has progressed significantly, remnants of this traditionally gendered view still remain. Our club holds the view that this terminology is metaphorical/symbolic and that the words "man" and "woman" or other similarly gendered terms should be understood to mean initiator(leader) and responder(follower). *We wholeheartedly support initiators and responders of every gender.* Please see our complete statement attached below, and never hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. *OSU DanceSport Classic: *Congratulations to all of our dancers who competed in Columbus, Ohio this weekend (See pic below)!! It was great to be out on the competition floor again! We will be traveling back to Columbus in November to compete at Ohio Star Ball! Keep an eye out for more information, and be sure to inquire with any of the officers and/or veterans if you are interested in competing! *Ballroom Social:* We'll be having our first official Fall 2021 social this weekend!! Message-ID: Dear dance friends, Our club's *first ballroom social* is happening *this Saturday Night*, in Rangos Ballroom on the second floor of the University Center! There will be a 30mins American Smooth Foxtrot lesson at 7:30pm taught by Natasha Nguyen and Cameron Hammel, and the social will run from 8pm to 11pm. This is a great opportunity for our newer members to get to know the veteran members of our club. For those of you who have never attended a proper ballroom social before, here is a quick guide to etiquette for just about any real dance social, including ballroom. 0. Wear something comfortable to move in that looks good. This isn't a black tie event, but don't show up in shorts :P 1. Ask people to dance! You can talk and get to know new friends this way. If you are a beginner, don't be shy about asking more advanced dancers to dance with you! 2. Feel free to say no for any reason (fatigue, don't know this dance, etc) if someone asks you, but it is recommended to sit out the remainder of the song if you decline to dance with someone to avoid hard feelings. You also have the option of saying something along the lines of "I don't really like / know Foxtrot, but let's find each other for the next Chacha!" if you feel that way. 3. If someone makes you uncomfortable, please let us know. We don't anticipate this being an issue, but of course we are here for you if it is. 4. Don't try to teach the people you are dancing with, especially if you are a leader. I know I've been guilty of this on occasion unless they ask you to; it's not fun for your partner. Seriously, trust me on this one. 5. Try to relax. Nobody is judging your dancing at a social; we are all here to have fun and move with others to music, and nobody wants to dance with a tense partner (it's stressful haha). Hope to see you all tomorrow night! :) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
