The start of October is here (along with midterms), so hope you?re doing well. Read on for some very important information regarding membership dues, mentoring, lesson locations, and more! If you want more info regarding events, be sure to check out our facebook page and team group ! General Announcements: Membership Dues: All dancers receive two free nights of lessons each semester. Mock Comp is in less than 3 weeks: Start looking for a partner! Ask around at lessons etc. Full details will be in next week?s email along with signups/registration and schedule. Mentoring starting (coming in separate email): For those of you that have paid dues, we are having a mentorship program running for the semester, split among different houses hosted by our veterans. You?ll be able to learn as well as compete throughout the events we host this semester. We?ll send another email with mentoring groups and messaging systems you can choose from later this week. Loaning from the Ballroom Closet: In preparation for mock competition, we?ll be starting to loan out dresses, vests, and more from our closet. Also, we?ll be giving out shoes that we have available (and if sizing does not work out we will show you how to order them yourselves from VE dance). Over the next two lesson weeks during social dancing, you can come with us to our club?s closet space and we will get you squared away with proper attire. For shoe orders, we will also have forms from our main supplier VEdance. Practice space - Friday, 4:30-6:30pm, Fifth and Clyde Residence Hall, Wellness Room - Saturday, 5:00-8:00pm, William Pitt Student Union Room 501. Friday is open to all members. Start looking for a partner! - Kennywood Trip on October 29th, costs $40 per person, details and signups will be in a future email November Events: We?ve got other exciting events planned with more details to come, but for a quick teaser? Ohio Star Ball Collegiate Section (Happening!): Congratulations to all of our dancers who competed in Columbus, Ohio earlier! For those of you who weren?t able to make it, you will still have another chance! We are hoping to travel to Columbus on Nov 19-21 to compete at Ohio Star Ball! You really do not want to miss this; it is a phenomenal experience and is typically one of the highlights of the semester for all who attend. Weekly Lessons Schedule: Newcomer lessons start at 7:40 PM! Monday, October 4 (UC - Rangos 1/2/3) 5:20 PM Advanced Standard (Professional Lesson) 6:00 PM Intermediate/Advanced Smooth (Professional Lesson) 6:40 PM Intermediate Standard (Professional Lesson) 7:20 PM Standard Rounds!! 7:40 PM Newcomer Standard (Professional Lesson) 8:20 PM Newcomer American Tango (Veteran Lesson) 9:00 PM Social Dancing!! 9:30 PM Newcomer/Intermediate Salsa (Professional Lesson) Wednesday, October 6 (UC - Peter/Wright/McKenna) 5:20 PM Advanced Latin (Professional Lesson) 6:00 PM Intermediate/Advanced Rhythm (Professional Lesson) 6:40 PM Intermediate Latin (Professional Lesson) 7:20 PM Latin Rounds!! 7:40 PM Newcomer Latin (Professional Lesson) 8:20 PM Newcomer American Rumba (Veteran Lesson) 9:00 PM Social Dancing!! 9:30 PM Newcomer/Intermediate Swing (Professional Lesson) General Info: Membership Dues: All dancers receive two free lessons anytime during the semester (NOT including last week's recruitment events). After that, lessons are $40 for students (regardless of grade and/or school) and $80 for non-students for the entire semester. Please bring cash or a check made out to "CMU Ballroom Dance Team". NO VENMO. Payment of lessons signs you up as a Ballroom Dance Club Member, enabling you to attend any lessons, come to socials, and be subsidized for competitions throughout the semester! Levels and Auditions: The club will not be holding auditions this semester. For the professionally taught Advanced, Intermediate, and Newcomer lessons, we recommend people brand new to ballroom dance to attend the Newcomer level. Dancers around a Bronze level should attend the Intermediate lessons, and dancers Silver and above should attend the Advanced level. If you feel like you fall between two levels, we recommend you attend both classes for the first two weeks to see which is better suited to your level, and stick with that one for the rest of the semester. Styles: You will notice that our lessons are split into four different styles of dancing. International Standard and American Smooth lessons take place on Mondays (Tuesday this week). These include waltz, tango, foxtrot, quickstep, etc. They move around the floor, stay mostly "in-frame", and are performed with long ballgowns. International Latin and American Rhythm lessons take place on Wednesdays. These include chacha, rumba, jive, swing, samba, etc. These are more stationary, use more "hand-holds", and are performed with short skirts. We teach all four styles and encourage our dancers to take advantage of this variety! Shoes & Attire: You do not need anything special to come dance! You will see many dancers wear various types of ballroom specific shoes and/or attire. These things will be available to borrow and/or buy later in the semester. For now, we ask that you please wear athletic/comfortable shoes and clothes. Sandals fall off, and jeans restrict movement. Both are highly discouraged. Some of our professional instructors may prefer that you dance in socks, so be ready for that if you are comfortable. Partnering: As always, no partner or experience is necessary! We encourage everyone to rotate partners and get to know everyone throughout each lesson! For more advanced dancers interested in competing with a dedicated partner, we encourage you to attend lessons and start talking to people! We will do our best to assist with partnerships, but there is no formal partnering process. Mock Comp and Ohio Star Ball are fast approaching; if you want to participate (strongly encouraged btw) you should be proactive at lessons to find someone! As always, our primary goal is for everyone to be comfortable and have fun! Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns! Hope to see you all on the dance floor! Hope your weekend has been going well. For people interested in ordering shoes, we are attaching a few forms and links from which to choose from. For the best quality of the options below, we recommend filling out the attached mail-order forms that involve foot tracings. However, if you are looking for a temporary quicker option especially for mock competition, the links would likely have faster delivery. A few of us chose one specific option for men and women respectively (for the women's specifically we chose a general Latin heel option), but if you have any questions or concerns feel free to reach out to any of us on the officer team.
