Hi everyone!

I hope your semesters/school years are off to a great start. I have a few students complaining about a delay they experience when situating objects in Alice 2.5 and Alice 2.6 between the time that they click or make some other movement with their mouse and when they actually see the effect of that mouse click/movement in their Alice world. I experience a similar delay sometimes using my teacher station and it can be extremely frustrating. Our school desktops are running Windows 11. Does anybody have any suggestions as to how best to troubleshoot this?

I'm teaching Alice again after a year and a half!  My students are turning in an assignment and most of the Alice files are .a3p files but a few are turning in .a3w files and I can't load them. Did they download a different version of Alice then the regular Alice 3 (the first Alice 3 on your website)?

Susan,

The a3w are exported Alice worlds for use with the Alice player, for example the one that runs on Oculus Quest.

Your students are turning in the wrong file. They could only have gotten it by exporting from the File menu. Alice still saves as a3p.

Susan,

A3w files are Alice Player files- it sounds like some of the students are choosing  ?export? from the File menu. Just remind them to choose ?save? or ?save as? which will yield the a3p format.

You can also download the Alice Player to run an a3w file however you won?t be able to see their code etc.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

This issue may be linked to screen magnification, graphics card drivers, or a not fully characterized interaction between graphics card, OpenGL, and Alice 2.

For magnification, ensuring Windows display is set at 100% may fix the problem.
If it does not, updating the graphics drivers might.
Finally, if the problem persists, you are probably in that third, under-characterized, category.

Carlos,
When you are experiencing these problems, have you quit Alice, and then restarted it to see if they persist. In my experience, Alice will sometimes exhibit these issues, if the program has been running for a long , with much manipulation of the scene in the scene editor. Saving the world and restarting the program also resolved these performance issues.

Hi Don,

The problem, when it occurs, occurs right upon opening Alice on some of the students' (and even my teacher station) Windows devices, when adding the very first object. Once an object is added to the Alice world, we click and drag and there's a delay, nothing happens, and then the object drags much further than we wanted. Very annoying.
