Aldona,
If I understand your questions the students should be able to save their file to a USB drive, a networked drive, or to some space in the cloud (i.e. Google Drive) that they will then have access to from the other machine. The other machine does not have to be the same platform, as a project created with the Windows version of Alice should be able to be opened on a Mac or Linux machine.

A word of caution if saving to the cloud, and then trying to use a web browser to download the Alice file. Alice project files (.a2w or .a3p) are actually compressed files and some browsers will recognize this and try to uncompress the files, making them unusable in Alice. Generally, right-clicking on the file in the browser and choosing to specifically save the file to a location on your machine, should bypass this problem.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

All the best,

Don Slater

Hi
I'm new to teaching Alice - love it! I'm confused on a key bit though - I'm sure it's a very simple fix... If students are working on a project at school, how can they continue working on it from a different computer? (Elsewhere in the lab, at home...)
Please advise!
Thanks, Aldona

Stephen,

Thanks for your ideas. I have been teaching Alice for one year and need new final project ideas. Your idea about old pen/pencil puzzle is great, as well as, giving a partially completed code assignment. I plan on visiting the library first thing tomorrow.

I agree when we think out of the box to create assignments that are unique, it does require more work on our part. Like you, I think it must be done.

Thanks for responding on your holiday.

To minimize copying,

1) I provide a 20% partially written Alice program, something I put together quickly and require the students to complete it.
2) My assignments require a "written by John Smith, 12/1/16" when pressing the "n" key. Last minute procrastinators often forget and submit work with another student name.
3) I give a small bonus points when assignments are submitted early. It means I can electronically return the programs with a request to fix an error. This give students good feedback but requires more work on my part.
4) From the library are some 20 year old paper / pencil puzzle books. I sometimes have the students to write programs that solves it. This is not likely posted online. For example:
A N T E Each number uses the same digits.
       - E T N A Find what are the numbers.
       ------------

Hi Terri,

In past versions of Alice 3 I found that sometimes adding sound files
introduced a type of corruption in the project file that prevented
opening it after saving. Did your students add sound files to the
project?

I am having issues with students finding code online and submitting as their own work. I can find some code on YouTube, but have had a difficult time finding code I know students are incapable of creating. One is a matching game. Several students submitted the same work, sometimes they did at least change the variable names.

Anyone know of websites, other than YouTube that students can find completed 2.3 Alice Code?

Hi Kelly,
I had that problem last year and the way that I fixed it was to have the students save their world right after they created the file, then close it, and then open it again. I am not sure why, but it seemed to solve the problem of it crashing and losing work. If they began working on an Alice project and waited to save their world after they had done some work there were issues.

When that happened to one of my students, she opened a backup copy, that Alice automatically generates, and it worked instead of the original file.
