alice-teacher s Digest, Vol 68, Issue 1...click and drag objects issues

We found that double clicking and holding on the second click helps.

We have two of twelve PCs that have Nvidia cards. These are the ones experiencing the click and drag issue. Have swapped them out with new out of the box cards but they are Nvidia as well. Now the problem occurs about 50% of the time. We've noticed keyboard object control at Runtime is a little flaky too. I'll post again when we replace with cards of a different make.

My students figured out that once you create a new project, you have to save it and close it... Then when you open the project, it is fixed and everything can be moved and resized from then on.

Hi,
This problem happened in class today and it's happening on my PC laptop as well, with Alice 3.2:

After we add objects to the scene, we can't click on the objects to access the rotation circles (or the translational arrows). We only can click on the ground, no matter where we click.
My students who are working on Macs do not seem to have this issue.

Ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks,

Reyna,
You may need to update the video drivers of your machine. Use the drivers from the manufacturer of your video card, not the more generic Windows Update drivers. See the following link:

        http://alice3.pbworks.com/w/page/54959364/Updating%20Video%20Drivers

You may be able to use modifier keys manipulate the models <cntrl-click> to turn a model left and right, and <shift-click> to move an object up and down. Also the one-shot menu (right-click on an object and select procedures from the context menu) may also allow you to manipulate and set the object.

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

Hi,
We are having the same issues with Alice 3.2 on both the MAC and Windows side. The weird thing is that it is random. It will work perfectly for a particular scene, and then if the student tries another scene, they can't use the "handles" at all. When they click on the object, it automatically switches the selection to "this" and they can only move the camera.

This has been a very vexing issue for us, as we have trouble duplicating the problem. At this time it seems to be system / machine dependent?

We would ask anyone who is experiencing this problem to send us specific information about their setup, it would be helpful. This would include:

        Manufacturer:
        Operating System / Version:
        Graphics card:
        Amount of memory:
        Java version:
Anything else that might be helpful:

I also experience this problem from time to time (it seems to occur in patches), and have also found that closing Alice and reopening it will usually resolve it.

I only use Windows 10 machines, but it also used to occur on Windows 8, and it has happened on all of the different machines I've used at one time or another.

I have noticed that it seems to occur more often when I am opening a number of projects in succession, for example when looking at student work.
Although of course it's only noticeable if I'm actually editing the work.

I have wondered whether it's related to background Java processes not terminating correctly sometimes.

I keep intending to try to track and document it more diligently, but of course am usually in a rush when it happens, and just want to get it fixed so I can go on with my work. I have tried a few times to replicate it, and will certainly let you know if I ever do.

Cheers
Margaret

Subject: alice-teacher Error with dummy objects in Alice 2
Message-ID: <56FD37B7020000E700090E02 at mail.kahoks.org>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

My students are working on the Treasure Hunt tutorial where they learn about scene changes. One student missed the step where it has you drop a dummy object at the camera and is now trying to go back and fix it. When he tries to add it in, he's getting an error message saying there is already an object in the world named Dummy Object, but we can't find anything like that in his object tree.

Does anyone have a solution or suggestion? I hate to see him have to start over as he's already worked on it for two days.

I'm attaching his world to this e-mail.

Thanks in advance,

Emily Reed
Business Teacher, Collinsville High School
