alice-teacher Student worlds crashing

Some of my students' worlds are crashing after they have been building it for several days.  This has happened in the past. They are using 3.1.61.0.0.  I've tried to get my IT people to update to the newest version, but they won't due to the file size.  It is very frustrating and demoralizing for them to work so hard and have their work all lost.  Is there anything I can do to prevent this or for them to be able to recover their work?  This is all we get:
