Alice 3 is an educational software tool, developed at Carnegie Mellon University. In NSF-sponsored formal studies, Alice has been shown highly effective for introducing computer programming concepts and transitioning to Java in an AP high school or first year college Computer Science course. This workshop will focus on Alice 3 and will include a transition to Java. Workshop participants will receive a copy of the latest version of Alice 3 as well as curricular support materials.

With Alice, students learn fundamental programming concepts in the context of creating animations, videos, and simple games. In Alice, 3-D objects (e.g., people, animals, and vehicles) populate a virtual world and students drag and drop graphic tiles to create a program. Alice 3 has been designed to be especially suitable for courses where students are expected to transition into writing Java code, either by the end of an Alice to Java course or as preparation for a traditional Java/AP course.

This workshop will be presented by nationally recognized curriculum experts in Alice.
