Although I work as a gifted education specialist, I have worked with a
range of gifted, ELL, special-needs, and "classic" elementary students
using Alice. As in anything else, it comes down to staying focused on the
end goals of the course, knowing what structures can help the student (no
matter what the identification) succeed in reaching those goals, and then
working to provide that support. Coordinating with specialists who have
knowledge and training in the targeted areas for identified students is
helpful because those specialists have insight in learning processes and
often know the students over years of work. In some cases, my "special
needs" kids took to Alice in a way that they had never taken to schoolwork
before because of the immediate, visual feedback.

Good luck, and feel free to contact me off-list if I can be of more help.
