alice-teacher java not found error message

On Windows machines, when trying to install Alice, some have experienced a "java not found" error message, even after installing the latest Java SDK… You may need to set the Java class path variable on your system.

On Apple OS X machines, there have been reports that the Java JDK from Oracle interferes with the Apple version of Java. Alice should run without problems on Java 7, but there may be something going on that we have not identified yet…
As you are running OS X 10.7.5, go to Applications -> Utilities -> Java Preferences, and make sure that Java 6 is at the top of the list of Java versions that you Mac will search for…
If you do not have Java 6 listed in the preferences app, download and install the Apple version of Java….
