I was wondering that myself for Alice 2.3. I've gleaned a lot from working with it over the past year and from frantically searching the internet, but it would be nice to have something more detailed, complete and compact.

Has Alice been used in elementary schools?
I'm applying for an NSF grant, Discovery Research K-12,  that will serve K-12 grade students in two counties and 15 school districts.  We want to put FAB Labs in 7 high schools, Smart Labs in 10 elementary school for grades 2-6, and teach programming using Alice for all K-9 grade students.  I did not see any reference to anyone having done this yet.  Can you tell me if anyone has and where?

I have found that using the textbook "Learning to Program with Alice" by Dunn, Cooper and Pausch very helpful for Alice 2.3.

For Alice 3.1 I like "Learning Java through Alice" by Daly and Wrigley. There is also some nice resources on Curriki written by Oracle.

Two times a year we release a major update of the Alice 2 software package with gallery updates, feature modifications, and bug fixes. We use this twice a year schedule so that schools are able to update the software on their systems (if they choose), between semesters. We are very excited to announce that students can now create animations of Garfield the Cat with this latest version of Alice 2 (Alice 2.4).

Wanda Dann, director of the Alice Project, said this new release of Alice features Garfield, Odie, Jon, Nermel and other characters from the popular comic strip. She notes the latest release is geared to appeal to middle and high school students as teachers are increasingly requesting educational materials for computer science that are appropriate for that age group.

Permission to add the Garfield characters to Alice was provided to the Alice developers through an agreement with Paws Inc., the company founded by cartoonist Jim Davis that manages the corpulent kitty's creative and business concerns. Garfield & Friends, created by Davis in 1978, appears in more than 2,100 newspapers worldwide and is read daily by 200 million people.

"Alice is used in classrooms around the globe, so we appreciate the influence an internationally recognized character such as Garfield has on school children," Dann said. "It says a lot about Jim Davis and Paws Inc. that they are willing to share these beloved and valuable characters with Alice. It means they really care about children and their education.?

I am trying to export my students' alice stories into a Movie. Is there a tutorial or handout on this? It seems that I am doing it right, but then where does it go? The textbook I have Learning to Program with Alice doesn't have anything about Export as Movie.

We have been teaching coding to kids from the age of six in Iceland (and now recently in the States).
We have been building up a methodology based on research studies in Psychology, Education and Technology to teach young people from the age of six and
one of our foundations is 3D programming environments (Alice included). We have also been teaching teachers and help schools out in implementing our methodology, train their teachers and give them access to a curriculum and material.

Has Alice been used in elementary schools?
I'm applying for an NSF grant, Discovery Research K-12,  that will serve K-12 grade students in two counties and 15 school districts.  We want to put FAB Labs in 7 high schools, Smart Labs in 10 elementary school for grades 2-6, and teach programming using Alice for all K-9 grade students.  I did not see any reference to anyone having done this yet.  Can you tell me if anyone has and where?

disappears when repositioning.  We played with it and programming does not
cause problems, just manipulating the object in the scene set up.  Is this

Sometimes when this happens, returning to the Code Editor (clicking on the ?Done? button) and then coming back to the Scene Editor fixes the problem. The enderer of the Scene Editor will sometimes get ?confused?, and just needs to be reset.

But if this is a consistent problem, please send me a copy of the world.

Sandy,

The problem is not with the code but with the magician. To simply put it, it is a matrix multiplication error that happened when you try to manipulate the object on a very small scale. Due to this error, certain points on the object is placed wrongly, and when reconstructing the model, it is not what it looks like before you moved it. As far as we know, this only happens to the magician and the rabbit model.

Anyways, if you get this error, please do not ignore and continue. Press undo until the model returns to its original look and try moving it again.

version 2.3 it was located in People, after the Zombie. It was the last

?Created a checkbox in Preferences menu to allow users to show/hide He/She builder in Gallery.  Recreated some of the He/She builder's textures."

As Alice is being used throughout the world, for some cultures, there has been some concern about some of the clothing options available in the He/She Builder. And because the Builder is an app built into the Alice system, and not just a series of models, we felt the best solution was to add a Preferences option to display or hide He / She Builder. We also decided it was better to ship the system with the He / She Builder hidden.

I have to apologize as I fully intended to announce this change to the list, and the announcement got away from me.

I am sorry for the confusion.

Please let me know if you have any other questions concerns.

Note that there has been some reorganization of the Gallery, which is also described in the Release Notes.

Alice 2.4 contains not only the Garfield world, but a set of Garfield characters in the Gallery: Garfield (2 versions, Odie, Jon (2 versions), Liz (2 versions), Arlene (2 versions), Nermel (2 versions), and Pookie. It is possible to use these characters and worlds in earlier versions of Alice, but 2.4 does contain some feature modifications and bug fixes, as detailed in the Release Notes?

Some people are also reporting problems with sound and setting up a scene Alice 2.4, which we hope to soon have fixed. Stay tuned.

If you are getting this error,

Error during simulation.
??? javax.media.j3d.CapabilityNotSetException: Appearance: no capability to set transparencyAttributes ...

or having problem playing sound in Alice, then you need to download this new Alice jar file 
https://www.dropbox.com/s/fuezefrtv7rgegr/alice.jar. 

Download and replace the old ...\Alice 2.4\Required\lib\alice.jar with this new file.



If you are getting this warning,
Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.ClassCastException
??? at javax.swing.LayoutComparator.compare(LayoutComparator.java:61) ...

You can ignore the message and continue. This is just to notify you that Alice is having problems with the screen layout.


Please make sure you have the latest release as we have fixed a lot of bugs in this new release. Please check the date of the file to make sure you have the latest file.

I'm guessing it's the same for Alice 3; In Alice 2.x variables created as properties of the World object (top object in the object-tree) could be seen/manipulated by all other objects.


Hello All -
I am trying to iterate a counter in an event listener, so that if the user
clicks on four objects, an action occurs.   How can I do this?  I also
can't figure out how to make a global variable that can be accessed
throughout the program.

This just in from my student:

 

It?s not that normally messing with his arm caused it to glitch. It?s when I would undo having moved his arm that caused it to glitch. Just messing with his arm was fine, but If I moved his arm starting from the torso and then clicked undo, his arm would become invisible. I?m saying this because everyone's best explanation for fixing this is to press undo, but the more I press undo the worse it gets :P.

The problem is not with the code but with the magician. To simply put it, it is a matrix multiplication error that happened when you try to manipulate the object on a very small scale. Due to this error, certain points on the object is placed wrongly, and when reconstructing the model, it is not what it looks like before you moved it. As far as we know, this only happens to the magician and the rabbit model.

 

Anyways, if you get this error, please do not ignore and continue. Press undo until the model returns to its original look and try moving it again.

Alice 3 does not really support global variables in the same way as Alice 2. Alice 3 is Java-based, with a strong sense of scope for variables.

It is possible to create a variable that belongs to the Scene class, that can be used by any other methods (functions and procedures) written on the Scene class. But If I am writing a method for the Penguin class, that method does not have access to the variable created in the Scene. That Scene variable must be passed as a parameter to the Penguin method that would like to use it, and a function of the Penguin class must return a value to for updating the Scene variable.

The standard Alice version attempts to hand-off some of the graphics manipulations to the graphics cards of a computer. Slow and Steady Alice was built for those machines whose cards could not handle this functionality (over time, those machines are becoming less common). By and large, you will want to use standard Alice, and only try Slow and Steady Alice if your machines are not rendering the worlds correctly. Performance on Slow and Steady Alice will suffer somewhat.

Sound was an issue on some, not all machines, in the version we released last week, which was why we did not discover it, until some of you started reporting problems. We are starting to receive questions regarding Alice and being able to use either version on the Chromebook.

Alice is not designed to work on any mobile devices at this time.

However, I understand that it is possible to install linux on a Chromebook (see the following link:)

If you want to go down this path, there are linux versions of both Alice 2 and Alice 3, but this is an implementation we have not yet tested.

I can see how to pass a variable between the methods, but how can I pass it
between an event listener and a method?  I want to, for example, keep track
of number of mouse clicks during a game.  How can I do that?  I can't
create a parameter in an event listener....  I think I am missing a step or
a piece of understanding in figuring out how to manage this.

See the attached screen shot and Alice world (countClicks.a2w)

I have created a project with a t_rex and a triceratops, and I want to count when each is clicked on. I have created a variable for the t-rex and triceratops that keeps track of the number of times each is clicked on.

I have written a world method countClicks with an object parameter objectsClicked (shown in the screen shot).

IN the events editor, I have created a "when the mouse is clicked on anything do? event. I leave <anything> as the possible target to trigger the event, and from the do: drop down menu, I select the world countClicks method and from the objectClicked parameter menu, I select ?expressions? and ?object under mouse cursor?.

I hope that this answers your question (I hope that I understood your question! ;-) )

That Scene variable must be passed as a parameter to the Penguin method that would like to use it, and a function of the Penguin class must return a value to for updating the Scene variable.

Anything I need to look out for?  I thought this might be a good time to
move it to the network with Alice 2.4 instead of trying to upgrade all of
these machines.

I am not quite sure that I understand the question completely. You do not need to load a copy of Alice for each user of a machine, one copy per machine is sufficient (I believe that you understand this). If the issue is the preferences file for the users, the above link has instructions tonsure that each user has their own preferences file.

If you are asking if there can be one copy of Alice on the server that everyone accesses and runs Alice from the user, this is where Alice has been hit or miss. It may work, with some performance degradation, but I am personally not very hopeful.

It is not necessary to install Java for Alice 2.4, as it ships with its own virtual machine.

But the Java is not causing the problem wither. We are looking into this.

What we do is have the IT staff install it on their image over the summer and then when they refresh the PCs prior to September they all have the same version.

We use Alice on lab computers.  One install covers all users.  The
students save their work on a network drive in their own profile with no
problems.

Poses are on the way in Alice 3.  They are not in yet, but progress is being made.  We would expect them in next summer.

I've been teaching Alice for many years, and normally make my own lesson plans for teaching my students. I have taught Alice to Kindergarten children (advanced) all the way up to University students. 
Generally, I show small examples of what the students can do, and then I have them create animations which parallel my examples.
For very young children, I usually use "Story Telling Alice", and for the older students, I use Alice (version 2.3).
Please let me know if you have any ??

Is there a difference between Alice Alice 2 and 3?

Can I install 3 Alice and teaching at all stages: pre-school, elementary

But today a student downloaded several sound effects .mp3 files and then imported them into her Alice story, but couldn't hear them. Then she imported a .wav file and it worked. Do only .wav files work?
I wanted to send the actual Alice file, but forgot to save it from the school network today, to send out tonight. If the answer to this requires seeing the code, I can send it tomorrow.

This is a known bug in Alice 2.

Sound-related
Alice can play most but not all mp3 and wav files
Open your sound file in an audio editor, such as Audacity, and resave your file as either a .wav or a .mp3. If for some reason the .mp3 still does not work, save the file as a .wav. 

Not all .mp3 files are created equal (created with different codecs and libraries, and it is very difficult for us to keep up with every variation.

Audacity is a free to download and use sound editor. To re-export your sound file as a .mp3 you will have to install the .lame plug-in (as .mp3 is a licensed format), (see the instructions in the Audacity home page (http://audacity.sourceforge.net).

Just recently I have been having troubles opening Alice on my computer.  The splash screen starts up, but the actual program will not load.  To stop the software I have to go into task manager, find it and stop it, otherwise the start screen stays on my computer screen.  I have deleted the files, emptied temporary files, cleared cache, updated Java, re-downloaded it.... Still nothing.  When the updated software was released I was able to open it once, then it has gone back to this behavior.  Am I missing something? Could there be possible compatibility issues with another software that could be preventing it from opening?

I am assuming you ar stalking about Alice 2.x? In emptying the temporary files, did you find the ?.alice2? preferences file in your home directory, and delete it (it may be hidden by the settings of your OS). If not, delete this ?.alice2? directory, and then try to start Alice.

 So now we've imported sounds and/or only .wav files, and they are working!
However, how do you set the sound file so it plays throughout the entire Alice story, like background music? I understand that the music has to be the same length as the movie video, or it will error.

In the events editor, you will see an event

	"When the world starts, do world.my first method"

Replace the call to my first method with a DoTogether block. Drag the call to "world.my first method? into this DoTogether block, and then drag in a ?play sound? tile (choosing the sound file that you want to play as background) into the same DoTogether.

Yes, this method is what my students did. It's just a bit more work to download the sound, pull into Audacity, then export to .wav file, then import into Alice; especially since some .mp3 files work as is.


We use Audacity in other projects. In fact, my  fairy tale assignment includes the students creating a score/background music for their Alice movie using Audacity then importing it into Alice.  Then also adding in other sound effects such as princess screaming, dragon roaring. One student even has a loop of horse galloping sound as the knight rides in to the rescue.  We are really having fun with it.

This is a known bug in Alice 2.



Sound-related

Alice can play most but not all mp3 and wav files
Open your sound file in an audio editor, such as Audacity, and resave your file as either a .wav or a .mp3. If for some reason the .mp3 still does not work, save the file as a .wav. 



Not all .mp3 files are created equal (created with different codecs and libraries, and it is very difficult for us to keep up with every variation.


Audacity is a free to download and use sound editor. To re-export your sound file as a .mp3 you will have to install the .lame plug-in (as .mp3 is a licensed format), (see the instructions in the Audacity home page (http://audacity.sourceforge.net).

Bridget,

Please make sure you have the latest version Alice 2.4.1. You are probably missing some files in your Alice folder. This can happen when Alice fails to load some required libraries.

I am assuming you ar stalking about Alice 2.x? In emptying the temporary files, did you find the ?.alice2? preferences file in your home directory, and delete it (it may be hidden by the settings of your OS). If not, delete this ?.alice2? directory, and then try to start Alice.

I have the exact same issue on a few of my student computers.  It will work for one student but not for the next one.  Any ideas?

I also tried to do this and I think this would be very appreciated.

Would be nice if we could create an alice world in MS Windows or Linux or 
other and run on a tablet running Android, iOS or WinRT
without installing Alice, just using Java VM.

Don,

A few of my students are encountering the message:  An unknown error has occurred

when attempting to add an object to a world using Alice 4.x

The object is selected and the specifications for the object appear.  Students selects 'Add instance to world,'  the camera pans to where the object should appear but nothing shows up.  The error message is then shown.

Could this be computer specific?  All of these students are using a PC laptop when this occurs; this error has not yet shown up on the MacBooks.

I am making a game and cannot figure out how to make an object break when
shot and  only when the revolver and object are aligned with a minimal +/-
factor.

For example, the space bar fires the revolver.  Only when the revolver and
lamp (object) are in near alignment should the lamp break when the revolver
is fired.  The lamp should not break when fired and when not in alignment.
 I will apply the problem to other objetcs in the world when solved how to
do this.

I am trying to create a NetBeans project from an Alice 3.1 project. The
Alice plugin for NetBeans has been successfully installed.  Following
instructions in "Learning Java Through NetBeans," and choosing File -> New
Project brings up a dialog with the option to Choose a "Java Project from
Existing Alice Project" (see attached screen shot). After selecting this
option and browsing for an existing Alice project and selecting "Finish"
yields nothing.  The NetBeans interface shows that no project has been
loaded.

Has anyone been able to open an existing Alice project in NetBeans?

This is surprising, as it sounds like you are doing everything you should?

Create a very simple Alice 3 world, perhaps with just the grass scene and one object, save it, and try and convert it...

If the simple project converts successfully, send me a copy of the file you are trying to convert.

If it does not work, is there a way for you to create a video screen capture so that I can see what is going on?

See the attached document? The error message is not quite the same, but the behavior sounds similar.

Also be sure that you are using the very latest version of Alice 2.4.1 ? which was posted 12/10?

I have installed Alice 2.4.1 dated December 10 but I am still receiving the following error:

Throwable that caused the error:
                javax.media.j3d.CapabilityNotSetException: Appearance: no capability to set transparencyAttributes
                at javax.media.j3d.Appearance.setTransparencyAttributes(Appearance.java:374)
                ....

Is this still an ongoing problem or is there something else I should be doing?

I have an idea for this:

1. Create a bullet object. It doesn?t have to be visible for this game, I think, so it can be a dummy object. I used a bird from the Animals because it?s small and it can be seen during development.
2. Move and orient the bullet to the revolver. Set the vehicle property of the bullet to the revolver as well.
3. In the shoot method, move the bullet forward the distance to the desired object. Do this with duration 0 seconds so it happens instantly. If the revolver was pointing at the object, the bullet will be right on top of it. If the gun was pointing a little off, the object will be a little off. So:
4. Check the distance between the bullet and the object. If it?s within a threshold, the object should break. (I?m not sure how the student will make a breaking animation.)

I modified the file you sent as a proof of concept, but I can?t attach it to the email. You have to aim a little low for it to work.

Hi, I'd like to know if someone has real Moon .ase file surface as a sphere
to import into Alice. Alice Moon class is not so realistic as for example
Sketchup model from 3d warehouse models. The problem with Sketchup is that
it's exporter doesn't export texture as well. Attached pictures show what I
get if I export ase from Sketchup and import ase into Alice.

Don,

Looked at the attachment on changing the rendering but only have Java3D as the rendering option.  I have the problem on a Windows 8.1 machine with DirectX installed, but I do not have the problem on another machine (hardware different)  with same software installed.

The biggest problem is that I have multiple computer labs with same rendering problem (only Java3D) all Windows 7 machines.  Alice 2.3 there was no problem with rendering, any suggestions how I can get DirectX 7 or JOGL in the rendering options  for Alice 2.4.1?

We are still having a number of problems with sound files in our Alice stories. 
First we couldn't hear the .mp3 files within Alice. We used Audacity, so now we can hear the sounds and/or music while playing them in Alice.
However, when Exporting to Movie, it only saves/Exports the video portion, and not the audio portion. I thought that perhaps it was because the sound file was in a different drive. But when everything is in the same drive, it doesn't work. It does work for some students!

This is very frustrating as we were supposed to be finished last week, as we are showing them all, to be part of the Science Fair at our school this week! (The Computer Science booth, which  I requested that we be included).
There are 4 don't work.  One seems so simple, 
The first one seems so simple, I don't know why it isn't working.

Maya, 3DS Max, Blender and so one are too complicated for now. But I've
just foud a way. For sphere is very good as a tecture picture of Moon like

Thanks a lot for a hint.

Besides this, I've got an idea how to built object for Alice 2x. Sketchup
is easy for drawing shapes, but it's going to be fine if you upgrade Alice
to the version where is possible to show objects hierarchicaly. Object can
behave together with "vehicle" possibility as we can do now. For Alice 2.5
I recommend just to make possibility to "show" object hierarchicaly,
because of semantics. Other features are already in Alice 2.x. It'll be a
great advance for young students, because in this way they can draw and
make programs. Or is this posible already?

Unfortunately we are still having problems with worlds that use recorded sounds, including the fact that our exporter does not recognize that an animation may be over, because the background music may still be playing. For example, if I have a 45 second animation, but I am using as background music a 3 minute and 15 second sound clip, then our exporter will want to record all 3 minutes and 15 seconds.

Use screen capture software, such as Camtasia or Jing, to capture the playback of the Alice animation on your computer screen, not using the Alice export File command. 
For Mac OS X, there is video screen capture capability built into QuickTime Player, which comes with the Mac. See the following link for more information:

Yes, I had seen a previous email about this error, so students made sure that their sound files were shorter than the animation. There are now only 2 that don't work--audio plus video. Both have short audio files.

 I downloaded Alice 2.4.1. I am now getting an error message (Attached, top half) upon launching of Alice. Then when opening an existing Alice animation, I got another error (Attached, bottom half).
This second error was caused on the Alice animation that has sound, if that may have anything to do with it.

We got them to work!  We got the last 2 to work by doing the whole thing in Methods: putting in a Do Together for the play sound with  a Do In Order for all the rest.

You need to move the play sound out from the event section. The sound exports fine if it is placed in a Do together block in the main method with the rest of the code.



I will try to make Alice export sound from the event section in the future.
