Hi everyone, This Monday, we have Dr. Danielle Bragg joining us remotely
for accessibility lunch. Please find the talk details below: Title:
Deploying Real Systems for Better ML Data Abstract: Data quality is
critical to ML success. However, curating real-world data is difficult,
involving understanding human and technical requirements; managing time,
budget, ethics, and legal considerations; and designing and implementing
collection and processing mechanisms. As a result, many ML projects
repurpose existing data or turn to synthetic data generation. Such datasets
are typically limited in how well they reflect the real world, and negative
downstream consequences may affect model performance, evaluation accuracy,
user experience, and legal implications. These impacts are often felt most
acutely by disabled and other underserved users. In this talk, I will
demonstrate an approach to AI data curation to help overcome such
challenges: deploying systems that simultaneously serve user needs and
collect strategic AI data. Collecting data through real-world systems
produces more realistic data, which is essential to training and evaluating
inclusive and accurate models. At the same time, these systems can Bio:
Danielle Bragg is a Senior Researcher at Microsoft Research. Her work
focuses on developing computational systems that expand access to
information, enhance productivity, and improve quality of life. Her work is
interdisciplinary, combining human-computer interaction, applied machine
learning, and accessibility. Her work has been recognized by paper awards
at top-tier conferences, the Microsoft Ability Summit Innovation Award, and
featured in The Economist. She holds a PhD in Computer Science and
Engineering from the University of Washington, and a BA in Applied
Mathematics from Harvard University. We will meet in NSH 3305 for this
fascinating talk! Thanks and regards, Peya
