All,

At yesterday's quarterly FMS facilities meeting, there was good discussion
about Carnegie Mellon's "Green Practices" initiative and recycling program,
as well as some other facility related topics that apply to Penn Ave.
Here's a recap of the topics discussed.

RECYCLING:

Specifically, the hot topic focused on the amount of recycling vs. trash
that the university removes from our buildings each day. Only 15% of the
total trash pick up on our campus is in recycling cans and goes to a
recycling center. Meaning, 85% of everything 'thrown away' is put into a
trash can. Much of this waste could have been recycled. So why wasn't it?
This discussion was more about bringing more awareness to the campus
community, to hopefully make people think a little more about what they're
throwing away, why they're throwing it away, and if/when it could have been
put into a recycling can but wasn't.

The general consensus was that a lot of people were just unsure about what
they could recycle, and what they couldn't. When people hesitate and just
aren't sure, they simply throw it away. A simple solution is to post a sign
near the recycling cans that gives a quick recap of what you can and cannot
recycle. I've created a sign to post above the kitchen recycling can (glass,
plastic and metal) as well as a sign that will be posted above the paper
recycling can (in the copy cubicle).

Other than the typical paper, glass, metal, plastic, aluminum.CMU recycles
many other things. To find out more about what can be recycled on campus,

ISS TRASH REMOVAL:

The trash removal schedule for Penn Ave has remained the same for a while,
but for our newer staff members and for an overview for everyone else:

1st floor private offices / cubicles - trash removed on Wednesday night (or
early morning hours of Thursday)

2nd floor private offices / cubicles - trash removed on Thursday night (or
early morning hours of Friday)

Common areas (restrooms, kitchens, conference rooms, reception area) - trash
removed EACH NIGHT (Mon thru Fri)

ISS SPECIAL CLEANING REQUEST:

For any special custodial requests, a work order should be submitted online
(through the FMS website http://www.cmu.edu/fms/) A charge for the service
'could' be assessed, depending on the frequency and type of request. Most
requests will be completed without an additional charge. For questions,
please contact me directly and I can work with ISS to ensure your request
can be completed and verify any possible costs that may be assessed. I am
happy to submit all FMS / ISS work orders, on behalf of any staff at Penn
Ave. Just email me your detailed request including location, when request
should be completed, contact info, etc.

BIKE RACKS:

FMS is stepping up their effort this year to add more bike racks on campus.
I have mentioned that Penn Ave could definitely benefit from having a bike
rack installed somewhere in our parking lot area. Kyle Tomer, from FMS,
will be stopping by Penn Ave next week to take a look around and see if
there are any good locations that a bike rack may be installed. If a
location is determined, we may have a bike rack installed this
Spring/Summer. This would be a courtesy of FMS, no charge to the
departments/building.

FACILITY / CLEANING ISSUES:

If anyone has constructive feedback that would be beneficial for me to share
with FMS at these quarterly meetings, please send your thoughts to me via
email. Any urgent issues should be immediately brought to the attention of
FMS or to myself.

Thank you,
