I think we have plans. Plus, the last several weeks have been pretty stressful, and this week doesn’t look much better in the lead up to Barony Twelfth Night and I don’t think I’m going to be able to deal with a three hour trip to Cleveland and back on top of everthing else. :-(

Have fun, all.

On Jan 7, 2019, at 12:01 PM, Ishiyama Gen'tarou Yori'ie <ishiyama@ee0r.com> wrote:

Debatable braiding enthusiasts,

I am considering driving out to the Cleftlands for this non-SCA study group meeting. We will be doing a
study of counterweight in braiding, led by Carolyn Haushalter. Because we
will all set up for this braiding project together, we will meet from 1:30
to 5:30.

For materials you will need something soft in bundles or the weight change
won’t show as effectively. Carolyn suggests lace-weight yarn with no
elastic or nylon content; perle cotton; crochet nylon in size 5 or smaller;
Imposter; or silk. If you want to use embroidery floss pre-cut skeins,
Carolyn suggests 3 skeins per tama. The bundles of the other materials
should be fairly thick, approximately 20 ends per tama. 15-20 ends is a
good number. Starting length should be 70 inches and we’ll mark for a
weight change every six inches.

Note: rattail should not be used as it won’t provide good results.

As for counterweight be prepared to braid with 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%,
60%, 70%, 80%, 90% and 100% of your tama weight. So if you have 70 gram
tama and are braiding an 8 strand braid, you will need counterweights of:
56 gm (10%), 112 gm (20%), 168 gm (30%), 224 gm (40%), 280 gm (50%), 336 gm
(60%), 392 gm (70%), 448 gm (80%), 504 gm (90%), 560 gm (100%).

Some of you have already RSVP'd but if you haven't, please let me know if
you’ll be able to join us so we’ll know how many to expect.

Thanks,

Jane

--
Ishiyama Shonagon (Elliott C.
