Hello! You may remember that we had a Fall Schola Series last year, in which we held weekly, beginner-level classes on topics of interest. Well, by popular demand, we are holding a Spring Schola Series on Pitt's campus!

Every Thursday from 7:30pm to 9:30pm, from Feb 17th through Mar 24th, there will be a new fascinating topic. We will be in Room 1640 of Posvar Hall at Pitt (see below for parking and directions).

Our first session will be taught by Lord William Parris: "Rapier Combat: Street Fighting in the Renaissance" It's a brief history of fencing in Renaissance Europe, with an audience participation demonstration of the basic moves you need to fight. If you ever wanted to try rapier combat, or like to watch and want to know what you're looking at, or just had a passing interest and want to know more, this is the class for you!

Next Thursday (if you're not going to Dance or Consort practice) is: Handsewing and fingerloop braiding. Learn the basic stitches every medieval noble would know for basic clothing construction and repair. Make a pouch, then learn how to make a lace to pull it shut.

See you tonight!
In Levitate et Caritate,
~Hilda, Seneschale

Directions: Wesley W Posvar Hall is in the heart of Oakland, very close to the Cathedral of Learning. It used to be Forbes Quad, for those who remember. Here's the street address: 230 S. Bouquet St, Pittsburgh (Oakland), PA 15213. It's in red on this map: http://www.tour.pitt.edu/tour-040-map.html. To get to Room 1640, go to the Schenley Plaza entrance (across the street from the park with the Marry-Go-Round) and walk in, **if you look slightly to your left, you'll see a building map and to the left of that, an elevator bay. Walk towards, then past the elevator bay, and follow the signs to Room 1640. If you use the Bouquet St entrance, walk straight across the building to the Schenley Plaza entrance doors, turn around, and follow from **.

Parking: Well, it's a little tricky, but you have options.
-The fastest thing to do is Park at Soldiers and Sailors (pay garage, $5 after 4pm, marked "SO" on this map: http://www.pts.pitt.edu/documents/Visitor%20Parking%202011.pdf) and walk the short two blocks down Bigelow to Schenley Plaza. Posvar Hall is past Hillman Library.
-There is also metered and street parking along Schenley Drive near the Carnegie Library and the Frick Fine Arts Building (statue in front), and also other streets, but it can be tough to find. You may have to pay for a half hour at the parking kiosks, as some of the spaces are only free after 8pm. Meters are free after 6pm, and are marked with a circled M on the above map. The closest ones are on Bouquet St, but be careful, as Bouquet is one way past Forbes Ave. Allow extra time to look for a space if you choose this option.
-Or, you can park at Phipps Conservatory (they are closed that time of night, so it's free) and walk across the bridge, past Frick Fine Arts (with the statue in front), and cross the street to Posvar (only about a 10 min walk).
