We want to thank all those who came out for the afternoon at Washington Blvd yesterday, enjoying good weather and good company. Thank you to those like Aibell, our new Youth Minister, who set up a table with activities and snacks; the toddlers seemed to enjoy the playpen. Thanks to Zoe who had a great turnout for boffer fighting! Thanks for the Officers who gave of their time for an Officers' meeting. Elss, our Chronicler, mentioned she would be happy to send a paper Althing to your address if you find it harder to get around to reading it online; please contact her with this request. Of note when upcoming events were announced, there is one Arts and Sciences event coming up, the Dark Ages Schola in Hornwood on June 13th, that some Barony members are attending and supporting. War Practice has classes and an Arts and Sciences forum and Myfawnwy's fiber forum.Other upcoming events are largely fighting-focused: Siege of Harlech, War College, Steltonwald's Children's Crusade in August, and Agincourt in October. Let's consider, in a Barony so rich in the Arts and Sciences, plans for upcoming events that focus on the arts as well. Again, vivant to all who attended a wonderful Barony gathering yesterday! Our next one is Sunday July 19th in the same site, Washington Blvd, at 1pm. Hope to see everyone there! Then they are supposed to go to the caffeteria for a "feast" at about 11.? We talked briefly about having different demo?tables around the caffeteria for kids to visit.? She is expecting the whole 6th grade and some parents -- about 160 people... I'm not sure who to turn this over to... I don't have time to organize it and have to work so I can't even go to the demo if we can do it.? I told her that we couldn't guarrantee anything, because of the time frame... We did a demo at the Sterrett School a few years ago. IIRC, it was me, Alastar, Remus and (maybe) Edmundo. We did a presentation in the auditorium for the whole school. I agree that this is short notice (I don't remember how much notice we got the last time, but it's really hard to get people to come out for stuff in the daytime, since most people work). *Especially* since it's the day before an event -- Alastar is mentoring Urho and William for the sideboard, and I don't know yet if we have to help them with shopping. On a related topic, Rufina posted something a while back about something at the Pittsburgh Zoo. Did anyone do any follow-up on that one? I'm pretty sure that one was a weekend, but I don't remember if it was June or July. Shelter 7 is the historic spot for the organizational meeting of Steltonwald. Many long years ago in the month of June our founding members got together at this very shelter and decided there might be enough interest to start a local group. The Grill will be going for food at 6pm and the meeting usually starts around 7:30 when we are all very full. You need to let me know if you are coming and we will have a Steak for you. We will have kosher hot dogs for all those who are not fond of steaks or did not pre-register & for children. Please bring a side dish that we may all enjoy. It does not need to period; feel free to bring a favorite recipe. There is electric at the sight if you need but you may need an extension cord. We will provide meat condiments buns, plates & plastic ware & napkins. You will need serving utensils for your dish and a steak knife. The meeting will be at an outdoor picnic shelter with a stream nearby. Bring bug spray, suitable clothing for the outdoors, towels and a change of clothes for any gentle large or small that may be drawn to the nearby creek. You may be more comfortable if you bring your own bag chair but there are plenty of picnic tables available. All are welcome to attend, Citizens of Steltonwald, Virtual Steltonwald, BMDL members, and all our friends. If you need directions to the park or more information please do not hesitate to ask. Yours, Ariella and Byron ----- Original Message ----- From: Cecelia Hughes To: Cara and Char Sent: Wednesday, May 20, 2009 5:34 PM Subject: FW: volunteering, crash space & ride to Pennsic I got this note via strange and mysterious routes. Do you have anyone up there who could help this lady out? Ming Li is moving into my house on a rent-to-buy plan; we'll still own land in the barony for the next 3 years, but with any luck, Ming will be able to get a mortgage then. While we still can't do Pennsic this year, this may make us able to make it next year, and give us a chance to see everyone! We miss you! Rhonwen ________________________________ On Behalf Of Krege, Barbara B Sent: Tuesday, May 19, 2009 7:18 PM Subject: [ProtoNet] volunteering, crash space & ride to Pennsic Greetings to all on the Protonet and ServiceNet Lists, I am THL Jayne Barber and I will be traveling to Pennsic for the first time, from Albuquerque, NM. I am hourly wage and before this year, Pennsic and my job at an elementary school (where I am a permanent substitute) always overlapped and I couldn't go. I am the student of a Pelican and we are looking at holding our first inter-kingdom war in the Outlands in another year, so I need to know about the behind the scenes work for a much larger event than we are use to in our barony (most we have gotten is around 1000 at our annual May event). I would like to help with Land Grab, gate, and whatever else is needed in the days leading up to and at the beginning of Pennsic. I am also the Outlands Kingdom Minister of Children, on the inter-kingdom youth combat review committee, running Youth Point for Wed, 7/29, 9:30am to 5pm, and on the Outlands Royal Majesties' Retinue the second week of Pennsic. AND I want to dance, dance, dance (European/Court Dance). I already have the offer of a one-person tent to use while I am at Pennsic for the 16-17 days. So, I am very excited to be going! I will be flying into Pittsburgh on SW Airlines, but to get a great deal--I had to book an early in the week flight - arriving late on Wed. 7/22 and departing Pittsburgh Tue 8/11 around noon. I needed a cheap flight, because I will turn 63 at Pennsic and I need to save for retirement. Unfortunately the shuttle service is almost as expensive as my roundtrip airplane ticket. I plan on spending the night at the airport on 8/11 and getting a ride the next morning to Pennsic or to crash space. But I need your help. I am looking for the following and I am willing to also do yard work, housework, etc. for airport pickup, crash space and a ride to and from Pennsic. I can also help with gas expenses. I also want names of people and contact information for people who are running the gate, running land grab, etc. at Pennsic-so that I can volunteer. I tried to click on the "email" that I find at the Pennsic War website, and I get this AOL form, but I don't know what to do and therefore, I am unable to get the email address. If you could also help me with 1) a ride from the airport 8/12 and crash space, 2) a ride to Pennsic-whenever you are going, 3) a ride from Pennsic to Pittsburgh, 4) crash space in Pittsburgh, and 5) a ride to the airport on 8/11 or you could put me on a city bus to the airport early on 8/11-I would be very, very greatful. The Siege is less than a week away and William and I wanted to thank everyone who has volunteered. Due to a computer crash last month, I've lost the emails from people who have told me that they would help, so we'll just plan to organize ourselves that day. The biggest project will be chopping. The soups and salads will all require knifing skills to cut up meat and vegetables. Anyone who is safe with a knife is welcome to help with that. I recommend that you bring your favorite knife and a cutting board to insure that we have enough tools for everyone. We also can use some breadmakers. I'm planning to make muffins for breakfast and some some facoccia duing the day, so we will knead (sorry, couldn't help myself) need some bread mushers and oven watchers. I will be baking a lot of bread the day before, but some warm stuff will be welcomed. We'll be getting to the castle early in the morning to get the truck unloaded and the day started. Don't worry ... calm down ... breath, it's okay, I'm not moving far, just to Bellevue. There is one problem, I'm moving on Friday. Friday afternoon/early evening?to be exact, and I need help. Zoe and Andreas have agreed to help, but I really have no one else who can assist. I know it's late to be asking, but trying to get the key to the house, and get the whole move planned has taken more time than I expected. Zoe has been fantastic enough to let me use her truck, but that's only if it can be fixed in time. She's working on getting it running. If she can't, I will figure out a plan B, but I will still plan to move on Friday. If anybody is available I would so appreciate any and all help; even if it's just prayers, because this move is breaking me mentally. Please email me off list, or call me.
