Subject: [SCA-BMDL] Activities this Sunday

Greetings to all Good Gentles in our Barony Marche of Debatable Lands!  We are fortunate that, so close on the heels of a wonderful Minohi event, we can gather together again!   Several people have taken initiative in asking to hold SCA-related activities in addition to the Barony meeting at our house this coming Sunday, March 8th.  So we have a very exciting and interesting day for all who attend!  Please bear in mind that, though we love more people at our house, our neighbors have had some parking complaints.  We ask, therefore, that people carpool if possible, park diagonally on the grass to take up less room, and use some of our nice neighbors' frontage which we will delineate. 
Here is the list of activities going on:
1) Barony meeting at 1pm in great hall 
2) Intensive Sewing workshop for TRH's in the basement starting at 10am
3) Mistress Antoinette's perogie making class in Period Kitchen (some time after meeting)
4)  Heraldic consultation and montly Herald's meeting in library (most of afternoon after meeting)
5) Our Chronicler, Elss of Augsburg, will hold drawing and illustration time for all, especially children, who would create artwork for the Althing.  Location will be where she prefers.
6) Leah will be selling off the troupe's excess Girl Scout cookies (cookies are cash-and-carry).  Let us know if you have any particular amount and type you'd like us to set aside for you.
7) Fencing (outdoors or in great hall after meeting depending on weather)
8) Rattan fighting (outdoors or in basement after meeting)
9) Birthday party with cool cake for Lucas, our youngest local Grand Master Bowman, who's turning 14!

That is what we have as of now.  Just use Google maps for 755 Stonegate Drive, Wexford PA 15090 for directions.  Feel free to bring any food or drink to contribute!
We look forward to seeing folks this Sunday!

It looks beautiful from the pix on their web site.? It comes with a ?companion book that outlies how the book survived through the centuries while other books of it's kind were destroyed.? It's a pricey book, but here's a link if anyone is interested.?

Expensive? Not really for what you're getting. Fantastic book,

Remember, all any young person needs to do is make a true and faithful freehand drawing that looks as much as possible like one of the pictures in the Althing.

There are simple drawings, and complicated ones, animals (both real and imaginary), some weaponry and armor. There are many subjects to choose from, and there will be more images in the March Althing.

On the second Sunday in March, clocks are set ahead one hour at 2:00 a.m. local standard time, which becomes 3:00 a.m. local daylight time. 
In 2009, daylight time begins on March 8 and ends on November 1.

So!  Don't be late to Barony meeting.  Set your clocks tonight, and we shall begin Barony Meeting at 1PM EDT.

There's been a change in the outdoor archery schedule as a result of the Barony meeting today.

On Sunday April 5th, there will be a Regional Archery Muster to be held at their Excellencies's castle from 10 to 5.

If you remember last year, in addition to shooting at the usual targets, we went up to the roof and shot from the battlements.

We can set up a training range for any one who would like some personal lessons.

This event is open to archers from everywhere, not just the Barony. Everyone is invited and welcome,

No competitions this day; just a lot of fun.

This will be a pot-luck event. Please bring a dish to share.

Greetings Good Gentles!  We were gladdened to see so many of our Barony, our neighbors, and friends from afar enjoying the day at the Barony meeting today.  We have one small pair of glasses, one gray-handled set of good sewing scissors left on the windowsill of the sewing room, one black jacket (left on the bed in the sewing room), and one infant toy as Lost and Found so far.  Thanks to all who sewed for Their Highnesses and all who made the day a success by enthusiastic sharing of food, knowledge, and skills.

Next week on Wednesday night, March 18, is the next scheduled sewing circle at the 
home of Ts'vee'a bas Tseepora Levi.  Sewing will occur between 8-10pm and all are

I will need to move the sewing circles from Wednesday starting in April.  Input
on which day to hold it would be welcome. 

Another request for input - is there any interest in a day-long sewing circle
similar to the one we just had to sew for the Royalty?  We would hold it 
towards the end of April or sometime in May.

DIRECTIONS

The address is 5167 Rosecrest Drive, Pgh 15201.  Directions from the north are to
take the Parkway north to Rt 28, and head away from Pittsburgh to the 40th Street
Bridge.  Cross the bridge and head up the hill to Penn Ave.  Turn left onto Penn.*

>From the south, come into Pittsburgh either through the Liberty Tubes or the
Liberty Bridge and go towards the Arena to get onto Bigelow Blvd.  Follow Bigelow
and take the exit for Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield.  You will cross the Bloomfield
Bridge.  Go straight, between Young Bin Kwan restaurant and the Shur Save grocery.  
Go one block and turn left onto Friendship at the light, and then one more block 
and turn right onto Penn Ave at the next light.*

*Once you are on Penn, go past the Children's Hospital construction and the entrance
to Allegheny Cemetary and turn left at Mathilda.  Follow the cemetary, bearing 
left onto Mossfield Road.  When the cemetary ends, turn left onto Azure Street.
The Jehovah Witness Church is too far.  Azure is 1 block and bears left onto Schenley
Manor Drive.  Go one block on Schenley Manor and turn right onto Rosecrest.  The
house is the next one in from the corner on the right.

>From the East End, the best route is to take Negley Avenue north to the first light
past East Liberty Blvd.  This is Black Street.  Turn left onto Black.  Go through
the light at Chislett and up the hill.  At N. Aiken, Black becomes Mossfield Drive.
Start down the hill and take the next right at Azure.  Bear left onto Schenley Manor
Drive, and right at the next street onto Rosecrest.  The house is the next one in

Hello!

Because of some emergency construction in Old Main Chaple, we've been moved
to Keystone 205.

Keystone is located in the second half of campus, on the left hand side of
the main road, past the construction area.  It is the building with a metal
keystone on it.  Parking is to the left of the union, or, if you
keep driving to the stop sign and take a left, there is parking in a lot
there.  You can also continue down that road to find more parking near
Public Safety (where the police cars are at).  There will be signs, because
205 isn't really on the second floor, but inside a stairwell area.  Don't
worry, though, it is a large room.

I apologize for this last minute change.

Many of you may not know that the Barony has a period-games
collection.  It's kept with the larder, alongside pots and serving
dishes and other useful-for-events stuff.  I've just been inventorying
it.

There are two boxes.  The small box is easily transported and contains
two or three sets each of nine-man morris, alquerques, tablero,
hneftafl, fox and geese, and shove-groat, as well as one or two sets
each of backgammon, checkers, chess, cards, and goose.  Each game has
a board, pieces, dice if needed, and rules.

So if you are organizing an SCA activity at which there will be, or
may be, period games, be aware that the small game box is there to
serve as an instant-period-gaming solution.

(The other box is huge, and should only be used if you're planning
extensive gaming activities.  It contains spare chess and backgammon
sets, lots of poker chips, components (cloth boards, glass chips) for
another 3-4 of each period board game, a tiddly-winks set (don't ask
me why), and spare odds and ends.  (E.g., it has the leftover handouts
- with rules, etc. - from the gaming event for which these sets were
made.)  It used to have an extra Goose board too, but I couldn't find
it.)

Charles has accepted a job as the Chief Historian for Army Aviation that will take us to Ft. Rucker, Alabama.? While the Army is willing to move us, they're not so willing to move us from both Fredericksburg, VA and Pittsburgh, PA.? So, the week-end of April 4th, we will be driving up to Pittsburgh to rent a truck and move such stuff as is possible out of our storage units and house.? (There's the small problem of our bed frame, which we couldn't figure out how to move out of the second floor when we moved down here.? The movers took it in by taking out a window frame, and that's way beyond our limited expertise.)? We'd appreciate any help we could get on the 4th, probably about noon, to load the truck.? Please let me know if you can help; I will be forever in your debt!
