Where did the year go? There are only 3 sewing weeks left til Pennsic Land Grab! If you're like me and can't get used to the earlier date for Pennsic, feel free to come to the sewing circle on Friday, July 3, from 10am to 4:30 pm in the community building at Frick Park at Summerset, in Squirrel Hill. The site is approximately 1 mile from the Squirrel Hill exit from the Parkway, in a very pretty neighborhood. The purpose of this sewing circle is to get ready for Pennsic War. With only 3 weeks from the sewing circle to Pennsic, it is a good time to get those new outfits made, fix up the old ones, and work on camp projects. Since the goal of the sewing circle is to let everyone work on their projects, no pattern-making or teaching will happen at this sewing circle. Please bring your own sewing machine and gear (pins, scissors, etc). A cutting surface and iron/ironing board will be available. Also feel free to bring fabric that would make someone else wonderful clothes and we'll have a fabric swap. A contribution of $5 for drinks and the hall rental would be appreciated. Those who are there at the lunch hour can order in chinese or pizza to concentrate the bulk of our time on sewing. If questions: Mistress Ts'vee'a, 412-361-0718 before 9pm or lefkowitzga at earthlink.net. It would be great to get an idea of how many people are coming, so feel free to RSVP (but it is not required - come even if you didn't RSVP). Directions >From downtown Pittsburgh and points west ? Take the 376 East exit at Squirrel Hill/Homestead. Follow sign to Squirrel Hill. Continue on Forward Avenue for 2 miles to Summerset Drive, turn right. See * below. >From Monroeville and points east ? Traveling west on PA Turnpike 76, take the Pittsburgh Exit 6 to 376 West. Follow 376 West through the Squirrel Hill Tunnels, stay in the right hand lane. Take the Squirrel Hill/Homestead exit and follow sign to Squirrel Hill. Continue on Forward Avenue for 2 miles to Summerset Drive, turn right. * Follow Summerset until it ends at Parkview, turn right. Follow Parkview to the community center ("sales office" signs help point the way). Unfortunately, the pool is restricted to residents. Help with cleaning up at 4:30 would be greatly appreciated. Please note, this is THE LAST DAY to be authorized in time for Pennsic. Please check your authorization cards and make sure that they have not expired, and show your correct division. There will be loaner gear available on the 19th. If you need it for Pennsic, we will expect you to carry it from the practice. Loaner gear will be the last priority to fit in our vehicles for Pennsic so please don't count on it unless you specifically contact one of us. Traditionally, our Barony guards the gate of Aethelmearc Royal for one day of Pennsic War. This Pennsic we are guarding Monday, August 3rd, and said that we could post one, but optimally two, guards at the gate throughout the day. The hours are 9am to 6pm in one hour shifts. If you prefer to guard with someone as a pair, please let us know, but we are happy to have single guards. We will have a schedule posted to this list before Pennsic and that schedule will be maintained in the common pavillion of the Debatable Lands camp in block N10. Please volunteer for this worthy service and see the comings and goings of our Royal Encampment! Just in time for Pennsic, I thought this might interest just a few people in the Barony. A British researcher has collected and placed online the service records of medieval soldiers who served in the Hundred Years War. The link is found along the right side of the page in this BBC article... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8160081.stm Mistress Kris Gilibari From myfanwy at nauticom.net Tue Jul 21 11:00:40 2009 From: myfanwy at nauticom.net (myfanwy at nauticom.net) Date: Tue, 21 Jul 2009 11:00:40 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [SCA-BMDL] medieval flower bulbs Message-ID: <58572.209.195.147.252.1248188440.squirrel@webmail.nauticom.net> Greetings from Myfanwy! Shortly after Pennsic I'm going to be putting in orders for various flower bulbs. These will be for varieties that date back pre-1600, for the most part, including saffron crocus, lemon lilies [daylilies that date to the late 1500s], and several varieties of period daffodils, including one that is dated to the 1200s (!). Other period spring-flowering bulbs are Spanish bluebells, Madonna lilies, several types of fritallaria (including checkered lilies and Crown Imperials), leucojum, and some hyacinths. I believe that there are possibly also period varieties of tulips (specifically some of the species tulips), but I'm not specifically looking to buy any of these this year -- and regular tulips tend to become deer, rabbit, or groundhog fodder in my yard. :-( Buying in bulk tends to bring down the cost per bulb, so if anyone in the barony is interested in splitting an order, please let me know. I have several different specialty bulb catalogs. Additionally, there other online sources, but I have not dealt with any of them before -- in particular the source for the 1200 CE daffodils, but I'm willing to take a chance on them, (although that would be a limited order of 25 bulbs total due to their own ability to provide large amounts). I'm also considering buying some other varieties of heirloom (but not necessarily period bulbs) since my house dates to around 1885; for example, I've previously planted 'Thalia' narcissus bulbs, which date to around 1916 and 'Hyperion' daylilies, which date to around 1911. If anyone has any questions or would like to put in an order, contact me privately, or see me at Pennsic (I'm in the camp called "Bear" and also spend a lot of time in the artists' tent at Heralds' Point). Unfortunately, I probably don't have time to put together price lists this week; I may have to make some runs back home during Pennsic, especially the first week, so I could bring up some catalogs if people would like to look through them. Lady Myfanwy ferch Rhiannon Ruth Morrisson myfanwy at nauticom.net PS -- I also have a couple of catalogs from places that sell heirloom and species roses! Both sides will enter from the south side of the Woods area. Combat archery will be permitted. Come have fun! The goal is to get lots of fighting in, so the resurrection points will be closer then the traditional woods battle. There's actually a nice breeze in the afternoons in the area we will be fighting in. Please don't drive up Currie road to reach the muster area. Count Jehan's Bounty is a safer approach. Additional help with marshalling, waterbearing, and chirurgeoning will be appreciated. If you can help, please let me (Tessa- tessathehuntress at comcast.net) know, so I can note it. Thanks to BMDL for sponsoring this for us. Please help spread the word.
