But it doesn't mention which beer hall it is actually based on.  Most people
who have been in Munich tend they prefer one or two over the others.  I
personally found the "Hofbrau" beer hall the most touristy of the lot, but
fell in love with the Augustiner beerhall (bearing no resemblance to the
Iron City version locally).  Walking into it felt like I was traveling back
in time (and the servers walking around with 6-8L of beer in their hands
certainly didn't hurt the atmosphere).  I really hope it ends up being like
one of the originals, as opposed to another touristy version.

This place is based on the original Hofbrau beer hall in Munich. I've been in the original, and I've been in the one in Cincinatti, and the new is very similar to the old. As soon as the customers spill enough beer around, it will be pretty darn close.

However, the servers aren't German, there's no live oompa band, and you aren't surrounded by people of various nationalities, so the experience isn't quite the same as being in the original.
?
However, the beer was good, the food was good, the music might be live on the weekends, and I'd go there when it opens if anyone wants to make a party of it!

I find the lack of oompa band disappointing.

This gives me the urge to arrange a party of people to show up with lyric sheets for songs like the Hofbr?uhaus song and start singing.  Singing is often infectious :-)

Greetings, all, from the autocrat and staff of the upcoming Fifth Known World Bardic Congress and Cooks Collegium!  Below are supplemental announcements related to the event.  We hope that you will forward this message far and wide, so that it will be of best service to all who may benefit.

MARK THE DATE!  November 7-10, 2008 at Crestfield Camp & Conference Center, Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania (15 minutes from Cooper's Lake).  Updated announcements and class listings will be posted on our web page, www.cooksandbards.aethelmearc.org.

RESERVATIONS.  There is still ample cabin and feast space available, and we will continue to accept pre-registrations (based on postmark) until October 31.  See the event web page for details.

CALL FOR TEACHERS.  We still have room for additional classes.  Even if you are not yet sure that you want to offer a class, let us know what you might like to teach, and also let us know of any help you might need to make it possible (e.g.,
co-teachers, equipment, a kitchen or propane stove).  Also, feel free to suggest that class that you always wanted to take!

ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATIONS.  The event does not permit tent camping, and the township does not permit sleeping in vehicles, but if you are unable to afford cabin spaces and would like to attend the event, let us know and we will try to find you crash space near the site.  Please specify the number of crashers, smoking preference and any pet allergies.  If you require handicapped accommodations on site, we ask that you send us your reservation early so that we may guarantee appropriate arrangements.

CABINS/BATHROOMS.  The brochure says that the cabins will have bathrooms.  Unfortunately, we recently learned that the site did not get the funding they expected, and they never installed them.  The good news is, each cluster of three cabins has its own heated bathhouse (with sinks, showers and plenty of flushies!) within a stone's throw.  The bunk beds in the cabins have unsheeted mattresses, but you will need to bring pillows, blankets and any additional bedding necessary for your comfort.

ALCOHOL.  The site will be "discreetly damp."  Period containers, no kegs, and we request that you pack your empties.  Common sense applies, please: becoming drunk and disorderly will be cause for removal from the site.

MERCHANTS.  Merchants are welcome at Cooks & Bards at no extra fee!   Please contact our merchant liaison at kwcb-merchants at andrew-dot-cmu-dot-edu.  Non-merchants with items to sell are welcome to do so informally, and a table will be provided where you may place a sample of your wares (at your own risk) along with personal
information (such as a photo) that will enable your customers to identify you on site.

PROCEEDINGS.  * DEADLINE EXTENDED to October 17th * Even if you do not intend to teach, consider submitting articles, recipes or stand-alone class handouts for inclusion in the event proceedings, to kwcb-proceedings at andrew-dot-cmu-dot-edu.

I have been contacted by a Cub Scout troop about a future demo (date 
undetermined).  I invited them to observe some of the 
fighting/archery/fencing/thrown at Agincourt, so if you see some families 
spectating, that may be them!  I tried to make it clear that they couldn't 
actually participate, but we welcome observers.

Greetings.? I've just moved here (Lawrenceville) from the far southern shores of Sangre del Sol, Trimaris. ? I've been mostly inactive these last few years, though I'd like to get started up again in fields like fencing (Thoguh I'll need to find/reacquire gear),? heraldry, dance, and gaming.?? My two roommates I just moved in with are interested newbies that I'll be dragging along.

I'm a touch intimidated,? I'm used to very small scale activities....Sangre del Sol is a shire out in the boonies effectively, and I've never been to anything larger than a small kingdom event.

Greetings from the staff of the upcoming Known World Bardic Congress and Cooks Collegium (November 7-10).  Please feel free to forward this announcement wherever you think it may serve.

In our tireless effort to make your life better and better, here is more information pertaining to the event:

CLASSES: Within the next few days we will post the list of confirmed classes, adding additional listings as we confirm them.  Check the event website at www.cooksandbards.aethelmearc.org. Remember: class registration deadline is October 17.  It looks like we are going to have a very full and diverse program!

LIBRARY: The event will offer dedicated space for a reference library (including scanner, printer and inkjet photocopier), stewarded by a professional librarian, and shortly there will be a more detailed announcement on the subject.  Meanwhile, what we need from you is resources; if you have personal works or recipes that you would like to make available, reference books, audio recordings or other materials, please consider taking some time to identify and gather what you would like to lend.  For those  with books and audio recordings to sell, consider lending a copy to the library, to entice your potential customers.  We anticipate posting a library "catalog" to the website in advance of the event, so please consider sending your list of items to kwcb-library AT andrew DOT cmu DOT edu.

Two Challenges will go on throughout the day, For the populace there will be a Hundred Years War General Knowledge quiz, with a prize given out during court to the winner. 

The other challenge was to All Heavy Fighters on behalf of myself as the BMDL Bardic Champion. I have challenged all fighters to join in a Triathlon
challenging skills as Artisan, Bard and Chivalrous Fighter. To accept this challenge you must submit a work of your own to the A&S tables. You must show honor on the battlefield at Agincourt. Finally, you must perform a bardic feat (Song, Poem, or Story) during feast in the evening. There will be a prize given for each individual category and for an overall winner at the end of feast.

I was asked to convey the following information by Dina Youtz (Arabella 
MacGrath):

Dina's mother, Margaret Wilson, passed away unexpectedly in her sleep 
last night.  Dina and Dave are at her parents' home in West Virginia 
now, and the arrangements have been finalized.  The family has chosen 
cremation, so there will be no viewing, but there will be a service on 
Thursday, October 16th at Calvary United Methodist Church in

Visitation with the family will begin at the church at 10:00 a.m., and a 
memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., with a luncheon to follow.  
The family has requested that no food, flowers, etc. be sent as they

As I slowly sort through my mundane stuff to put together some feast gear, I am finding some hidden treasures from the past that raise questions about how to care for materials:

The easy question:
What do I use to?clean pewter? I have some that has darkened considerably, probably from being run through the dishwasher.
?
The more difficult question:
I have some very old (well, mundanely old, that is) wooden wine glasses that have some kind of shiny finish on them. One has been?cracked for a while and is a bit warped. The other seeps when filled with liquid, so I deduce a hairline crack somewhere. Can these be saved and used, and if so, how?
?
Also, any and all information on feast gear (what one needs, what's period, what's not but useful anyway, and so on) will be warmly received and eagerly read.

            This weekend and next weekend the Zoo is hosting ZooBoo, where the

The best way to avoid it, though not in its entirety, is to come down

perhaps hop on Bigelow and come down Baum to Negley, instead of taking

28 (which is also under construction, complicating matters). If you're

coming from the East and South, avoid turning onto Washington Blvd,

but stay on Penn until you can turn onto Negley.

My thanks to Lord Liam, autocrat of Agincourt, for allowing me to do this at
the event.

Every September/October, North Hills Community Outreach (www.nhco.org)
collects and distribute hundreds of gently worn, clean coats at their Winter
Coat Shops in October and November. Coats must be CLEAN as they do not have
the funds or facilities to wash them.  Last year, 1,338 local individuals in
need received free warm winter coats.  They especially need children's and
adult extra-large sizes.

Bring out your coats!  Bring out your coats!
On October 25th, I will be collecting gently used winter coats at the
Agincourt event at the Dorseyville Fire Hall.  The drop-off point will be my
silver Mazda Tribute in the parking lot (signs will be posted).  Please
consider donating the gently worn winter coats that you don't need any more
to this very worthy cause.

Their third, and final, coat shop for this year will be on Novebmer 15th,
coincidentally at the Dorseyville Fire Hall.  After the NHCO coat shops, all
remaining coats are donated to various organizations and shelters in the
Greater Pittsburgh area for further distribution.

hi folks. i'll be at agincort in the *morning* selling the 2 card set of his
grace duke morghun as a fund raiser for their graces.

the good people of herontir raised a nice sum at their event with their
auction; i'd like to help do our little bit from this end of the kingdom.
we may not each be able to reach out and hug those good ladies right now,
but a little bit of funding to get them through a tough time would be a
great kindness. please keep your mind open to picking up a set of trading
cards saturday.

i very most likely will not be able to make it to the garnet tourney (i work
at a portrait studio and this is the busy season - not a good time for 3

Greetings unto the Noble Populace of the Barony Marche of Debatable Lands from Byron and Ariella, Baron and Baroness!  We hope all who attended enjoyed the wonderful event, Agincourt, today.  Though we know Lord Liam will thank many who made that event happen, we wish to thank those who retained for us: Lara Sukadrev, Lilias, Annalis, Zoe, Lyssa, and Catriona.  Thanks as well to Talon, Brother Donald, Brandubh, Boden, Jorundr, Gabriel, and Deryk for help with throne and fly set up and tear down.

We met many people for whom this was their first event, which is especially important to us.  Congratulations to Liam and his event staff, as well as Odrianna and her kitchen staff, for a succesful event.

The staff of KWCB 2008 is happy to offer a browsing/lending library for the benefit of event attendees.  The library will be located in the main hall, and will be open from the start of classes until an hour before feast on Saturday and Sunday.  The library may also be open after feast if there is demand.

The library will have both print and electronic resources, as well as a small photocopier, printer and scanner.  There will be materials for all groups: cooks, brewers and bards.

We are encouraging attendees to bring books and other materials from their personal collections to loan to the library so they may be shared with others.  The library will be staffed by a professional librarian who will provide loving care for all resources!

If you are willing to loan items, or have any questions about the library, please contact the librarian, Master Edmund Tregelles, at kwcb-library at andrew.cmu.edu or by phone at 716-863-2743.  Although it is not required, it would be greatly appreciated if a list of materials to be loaned would be submitted in advance of the event to the librarian so they can be added into a resource database for use at the event.

Regardless of whether you can bring materials or not, please stop by the library to browse, enjoy refreshments and chat with your fellow attendees!

and Baroness of the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands, court held

of Sylvan Aethelmearc at the Agincourt event on October 25th as
xxxxiii, reporting herald THLord Brandubh O'Donnghaile, assisted by
Lord Pavel Dudoladov.

Their Excellencies opened court and invited Lord Liam Mac an Tsaoir,
the Autocrat of the Event to attend them.  They thanked Liam for
hosting such a lovely event.  Liam in turn invited Lady Constance Glyn
Dwr, THLady Odrianna vander Brugghe, Lady Ruaidr? Mac Aoidh and Lady
Sarab bint Alima to join him in court as without the aid of these
ladies he could not have put together this event.

Lord Liam then turned his attentions to the deeds on the field, and
presented prizes to those individuals who the marshals had chosen as
the most chivalrous in the day's contests.  Liam presented prizes to
Lord Kaminari no Shiro for his chivalric comport on the Heavy Weapons
field, to Lord Clewin Kupferhelbelinc and Jorundr hinn Rotinn for
their deeds of chivalry on the fencing field, and to Lady Fredeburg
von Katzenellenbogen for her chivalry on the Thrown Weapons range.

Their Excellencies then turned Their attentions to Their champions as
this day had been filled with tournaments to select new and qualified
individuals to become the next generation of martial champions for the
barony.

Lord Gabriel Hawkes was called forward as the Heavy Weapons champion,
Gabriel held a tournament to find a successor, and the tournament had
selected Sir Graedwynn mab Teyrnon to be the next Heavy Weapons
champion of the barony.  Gabriel passed the sword of his office to
Graedwynn, and Their Excellencies invited Sir Graedwynn to join Their
court.  Gabriel was presented with a black and gold pearl beaded cross
as a thank you for his service as Champion, and Graedwynn was
presented with a scroll by Countess Aidan ni Lier upon a text composed
by Master Michael Alewright.

Lasher was called forward as the Youth Boffer Champion of the barony,
he was presented with a pilgrim's badge as thanks for his service to
the barony.  Their Excellencies then called Jake of the Debatable
Lands forward as he had proven the victor of the tournament that day.
Their Excellencies presented Jake with brownies baked into the the
shape of the arms of the barony as a reward for winning the title of
Youth Boffer champion.

THLord Brandubh O'Donnghaile was called forward as the Archery
Champion of the barony.  Brandubh apologized that he had been unable
to conclude some business as champion until this time, he had issued a
challenge to the populace of the barony to compete in the Gwyntarian
Winter Archery Challenge over the past winter, and had some
individuals to recognize for it.  Brandubh invited forward THLord
Fintan na Coilled who submitted the highest Longbow score of 194,
being ranked #3 of all archers across the known world, THLord Urho
Walterinnen who submitted the highest Crossbow score of 193, being # 4
ranked of all archers in the competition, and Lady Muirghein Gealbhain
who submitted the highest Recurve score of 149.  To these 3 gentles
who produced the highest scores in each form Brandubh gave them a
bodkin arrow point for their own war arrows.  Brandubh next invited
Robert of the Debatable Lands forward, Robert had submitted the
highest Youth score for the barony of 24 and for these Brandubh gave
him a pair of horn dice.  Brandubh recognized the achievements of
Jorundr hinn Rotinn who submitted the highest score of any novice
archers of 121, and was rewarded with one dozen arrow heads with which
to repair his arrows.  And Mistress Arianna of WInthrope was invited
forward for the most improved score, Arianna started the season with a
score of 66, and worked her way up to 124 with her recurve bow, for
this Brandubh gave her a brass candlestick and candle as she was
lighting the way.

Finally Brandubh returned to the topic of the day, he had held a
tournament that day to determine the next archery champion of the
barony, and the winner of the tournament was Lord Giovanni di Lupo,
Brandubh handed over his baronial quiver full of arrows of past
champions and added his bolt to it.  Their Excellencies presented
Brandubh with a beaded cross as thanks for his service, and Giovanni
was presented a scroll by THLady Gianna di Aurelio upon a text
composed by Master Michael Alewright.

Their Excellencies next called for Ian of the Debatable Lands, Ian had
served as Youth Archery Champion of the barony for the last year, and
had helped to design a tournament to decide the next champion, after
all the arrows were shot, Robert of the Debatable Lands stood the
victor on the archery field.  Ian then paced one of his arrows in the
baronial quiver and passed this regalia on to Robert.  Their
Excellencies presented Ian with a Pilgrims Badge to thank him for his
service as Youth Archery champion and presented Robert with Brownies
baked into the shape of the arms of the barony.

Lady Fredeburg von Katzenellenbogen was called forward as Fencing
Champion.  Fredeburg had held a tournament and selected Lord William
Paris as the next Fencing Champion of the barony.  Fredeburg then

legal once, as the regalia of the office.  Their Excellencies
presented Fredeburg with a beaded cross as thanks for her service, and
William was presented a scroll by THLady Allesandra d'Avignon upon a

Jorundr hinn Rotinn.  Jorundr had also held a tournament to determine
the next champion to follow him for Thrown Weapons.  After all Axes
and Knives found their marks, Lord Giovanni Magrino was the victor,
and so Their Excellencies called him too into Their court.  Jorundr
passed the axe of his office to Giovanni.  Their Excellencies invited
Giovanni to join them in Their court, and presented Jorundr with a
beaded cross in thanks for his services, and presented Giovanni with a
scroll by Countess Aidan ni Lier upon a text composed by Master
Michael Alewright.

THLady Myfanwy ferch Rhiannnon was invited before Their Excellencies.
Their Excellencies said that they had noticed her working throughout
the barony, she had worked int he kitchens preparing feasts, worked at
many troll tables, working at heraldic consult tables and commenting
sessions, teaching about her fiber arts and working at demos, for all
these things Byron and Ariella awarded her a Comet Or, Scroll by
Fruthikona Hrefna inn heppma.

Their Excellencies called forward Lady Fredeburg von

especially her wood block cuts and wood block prints that had been

The next session at Gwilym's is on Nov 9th, and the following Nov 30th.
These are both on sundays, starting around 2pm.

As usual the archery range will be open, for those interested, and
there now is a thrown weapons range, so bring those axes and knives,
if your so inclinded. Weather permitting of course.The archers lounge
is always open for small talk and tall tales.

As Captain of Archers for the Barony-Marche, I must address an oversight in 
the Court Report below. I was too exhausted to remember it during the event, 
so I will belatedly correct it now.

In a paragraph below, THLord Brandubh O'Donnghaile announced awards for the 
Baronial high scorers in the Gwyntarian Winter Archery Challenge. In so 
doing, he pointed out that THL Fintan finished third overall in this 
society-wide competition and that I finished just behind at fourth. I know 
the gentle from Calontir who won.

This leaves a gap at second place. Who might that have been?

He is far too modest to have said so at court, but that gentle was Brandubh 
himself.    Vivat!!

That also meant that three of the top four archers in a society-wide annual 
competition were from this region.

By the way, next winter's challenge should be starting next month.

To the subjects of the Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands does
Odriana vander Brugghe bid good greetings on this chill day in
October.

There were a number of talented, kind individuals that volunteered to
assist me in bringing my vision into reality.  I would like to
especially thank Elss of Augsburg who came to my home to help with
pre-cooking more than once (twice, even), helped with processing a
case of chickens the night before the event, and then spent a
significant portion of her day at the event helping to cook.

I also would like to thank Sophie Davenport for helping to process a
case of chickens the night before the event and for sticking her head
into the kitchen to make sure that I was hydrated and nourished the
day of the event.

Mistress Caitlyn fitzRobert, Lady Rua MacAoidh, and Lady Sarab bint
Alima also chose to spend their entire day in the kitchen.  I am
without words to convey my gratitude to these ladies for being the
backbone of the kitchen throughout the day.

Sandy, my Ace Dishwasher, kept us caught up with dishes all day and
deserves special recognition.  Often dishwashing is overlooked, but
without someone keeping things washed and ready to use, you can end up
with delays in the kitchen that negatively affect the timing.  Sandy
prevented that from ever being an issue.

Master Creador Twinedragon, Melodia Beaupel, Pavel, and Ernine ingen
duib Dara lent their significant talents to the kitchen.  Ernine gets
special recognition for the awesome backrub that she administered to
me later in the day, when it was really necessary.

Thank you to my two youngest helpers: Alissa and Alethea.

Thank you to Lord Deryck Archer, Lilias, Maggie, Analeigh, and Tadhg
O'Neill for washing dishes at the end of the day and for helping with
kitchen clean-up.

Thank you to Lord Kieran MacRae, who loaded the larder into his truck
to help me get things home.

Thank you to all of those gentles who stopped by the kitchen to ask if
we needed extra hands. Your willingness is appreciated and blessedly
part of the embarrassment of riches that we have in the Barony.

Another special thank you to Melodia Beaupel for keeping such a good
eye on Alethea all day while I worked in the kitchen and her father
attended an Alumni event.  Without the support of this fine lady, this
entire event would have been nearly impossible.

For those of you wondering when the best time to arrive at Cooks and
Bards is, I'll supply the answer:  Friday Night!  We have ample cabin
space to hold everyone, and the fun starts on Friday.

Stop in and Join us Friday night November 7th at 10 PM as Brandubh and
Tofi present Guitar free Single Malts.  A good old fashioned Scotch
tasting, dedicated to the memory of our dear friend the late Duke
Morguhn Sheridan, because he would have loved it.

The rules are simple, bring a bottle to share and we all taste and
enjoy until we can taste no more.  Whiskey being the theme of the
night, Single Malt is preferred, but fine Bourbon is welcome too.

Attention  Steltonwald Archer"s and Friends, I  just wanted to post  a change  in day & time  for the official practice......Starting this coming Sunday (November 2ND)     I will be holding  practice at the beaver valley archery club.  (The same site  that Archers to the wald  was held)    the time   for this  practice  will be  10 am  till 1:30 pm.
