Special thanks to Hilda for running the kids competition. Steven won that competition. Brandubh won the adult competition. There will not be practice tomorrow, November 2nd. We will have two more practices in November before the end of our practice season. That's this coming Wednesday. Apparently we managed to register the organization initially with none of the required documents/bylaws/etc, and now that re-recognition is being done electronically, they check for that sort of thing. If we don't re-register, we will lose ability to reserve rooms (assuming that was being done under the SCA "club"?), put up flyers, etc. Here's what's needed.. I really hope someone can help out with this, as, to make matters worse, I will be out of town Monday-Wednesday. 1) We need 10 members. That's members with a valid andrew account. I got the Student Activities coordinator to say that we might get away with fewer people, but at the moment the official members are just me and someone whose andrew id is 'flip'. If you are not 'flip', please register using OrgTracker. 2) Of those people who register, we need a secondary and a tertiary contact. Right now I am listed as all 3 contacts, and that's not valid according to their form (and the application gets bounced on that alone). 3) "Provide your organization's unique mission and include the organization's overall objectives" 4) Over the past year (Fall 2007 to now), what has your organization done in order to meet its mission and objectives? Please include all programs and initiatives. 5) Provide a detailed list of short- and long-term goals your organization wishes to accomplish, including a detailed description of events or projects that your organization plans to host or sponsor in the 2008-2009 academic year. 6) Constitution 7) Bylaws I can probably wing the mission, constitution and bylaws parts (basically by simply putting a reference to the Society and/or Kingdom governing docs), but someone else should write about past events and future plans. And register on OrgTracker if you are able!! If you can't figure out how send me a note with your andrew id. This weekend's Cooks and Bards will feature some bardic challenges. Consider joining in! BARDIC MADNESS ON FRIDAY NIGHT Here are five challenges to pique the interest of the most experienced bard, as well as the newest performer! All bardic activities are welcome as responses to the challenges: song, story, poetry, mime, juggling, instrumental or choral music, drama, artistic or dance, etc. Sign up for challenges on the day of the event. Challenges are not competitions; everyone who takes part can consider themselves a winner. Even if you don't perform, come to support your friends with applause, and enjoy the evening with us. The rules: 1. Challenges are not competitions. You win by entering. 2. Please limit each individual performance to 5-7 minutes maximum, to be fair to others. 3. Only one piece per performer per challenge. 4. This is a bardic safe space. Take chances, be creative, put your heart into it, and have fun! Pass the Tale All those who wish to participate get up together, and tell a tale from beginning to end. The challenge's patron will 'conduct' by pointing to the person whose turn it is to continue the tale, and deciding when it is time to end. Triolets Are Blue The triolet is a period French verse form dating back to the thirteenth century. It consists of an eight line stanza with 2 repeated lines (the rhyme scheme is shown below), and can be used singly or as part of a cycle. Try your hand at writing one. a - line 1 b - line 2 a - rhymes with line 1 A - identical to line 1 a - rhymes with line 1 b - rhymes with line 2 A - identical to line 1 B - identical to line 2 The King Has Called and I Must Go Throughout the Middle Ages, both ancient and modern, the crown will periodically issue a call for its populace to muster and march to war. Tell us of such a call. What did it mean to you? How did it make you feel? Did you wish to go? What consequences did answering (or ignoring) such a call have for you and your family? SCA-trocity Can they pry your kazoo out of your cold, dead hand? Now is your chance to make an UNreasonable attempt at pre-Seventeenth Century anything, with a performance that, while 'period-challenged,' retains relevance to our Society. At least one period artifact will be on hand to comfort overly-disturbed Laurels. Ghosties and Ghoulies and Things that Go Bump What was that noise? Throughout history, tales have been told of eldritch beings with various intentions toward humanity, and also of the restless dead. What can you dig up for us, as we shiver our way into nightmare? FEAST CHALLENGES No winners or losers here, either, just good entertainment all around. Sign up at Troll to entertain the populace as we dine! Kindly limit your pieces to approximately five minutes, to allow others their own opportunity to perform. Saturday's bardic feast challenge: We dine in sumptuous and period style thanks to the gracious efforts of those who labor, so that we might relax and enjoy. Perform a period or period-style piece involving food and/or drink, or those who provide it. Music, tales and poetry all are welcomed. Sunday's bardic feast challenge: Collaborate! If one voice or instrument is bliss, more than one is sublime. Get together with a friend (or friends), and make art happen. Your performance may be in any style, period or otherwise, that is compatible with the atmosphere we strive to create and preserve. However, the kitten needs a *permanent* home. We have 2 jealous cats and one complacent dog, a small house, and it just wouldn't work. Here are the stats: - about 3 months old - female / no signs of spaying - eats solid food - uses a litter box - black and white (we call her Oreo) - very playful and cute - gets along with our dog (a lab...very mellow) - nobody is missing her - we asked the neighbors. Since Animal Friends don't have any openings right now, and I don't want to send her off to the Humane Society (they have a lot of cats on their website, looking for a home...), would any of you happily welcome this cheerful creature into your home? Or, do you know anyone who would? Please respond off-list. Her recovery was hampered by a freak wound inflicted by a weapon which made its way to these lands via the Silk Road. She took a sea voyage to visit the healing springs, hoping to speed her recovery. Not long after her departure, a massive storm took the sea, and Kazi was never heard from again. Thus, she is presumed dead. She left me all of her posessions. Some of them will be available for sale to those who are interested at the Cooks and Bards event to offset her debts and cover the expenses for her funeral Mass; there is no body to bury as she was lost at sea, but her device, her awards, and her titles shall be interred in her stead. She also left some things behind for certain individuals, and I shall pass those on in person. I shall attempt to use the carving tools she left me. She was a fighter, a storyteller, and a carver, and she knew how to read and write. Many of you were closer to her than she was to me, and I accept her eccentricities and shall treasure her memory. You are unlikely to meet me - however, should you see a woman who looks much like the late Kazi did, wearing her clothes, please be aware that it is not her, but me, Kate, her twin sister. I shall gladly adopt her wardrobe, for she was a mercenary, and amassed various quality items. She attributed her success not only to her lord Brion's support, but also to the martial skill imparted by her Master Aeleric Basiliscus. Her baldric shall be returned to him, but the sword necklace he gifted her has been left for her daughters. I'd like to thank those of you who have been supportive of me and my new lord Brion during this difficult time. I shall take care of my late sister's family as clan tradition dictates. Please be aware that our clan may not be passing through these parts again for many years, if ever. With the warmest regards to late Kazi's friends, Kate -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We will end around 4 pm. Please bring handwork projects if you like and be ready to show curious gentles what you are doing. No garb is needed. As can happen, within an hour of my posting that we would hold it at our castle, notice finally came through that we did have Rangos 1 available to us this coming Sunday afternoon. So, plans are still to have a dancing-featured Barony meeting, but at CMU, starting at 2:30pm ending at 5:30pm. Initial directions from your Seneschal are below: Parking is easiest in the CMU parking garage on Forbes (just past Morewood), it's free on weekends. So directions, from 376 east take Oakland exit to Forbes, from the west/south Squirrel Hill Exit to Murray and left onto Forbes. We will await better specifics for finding the site, but please plan on being at our Barony's "more activities, shorter announcements" new meeting! The Debatable Consort will provide music for the dancers, and for that matter, anyone who would like to join us in the dance band is more than welcome in doing so! Many musicians also like to dance, so it's important to have a good number of instruments available. IS, Margretha La Fauvel, Debatable Consort Head Noisemaker -- Nothing stays hidden under the sun. Initial directions from your Seneschal are below: Parking is easiest in the CMU parking garage on Forbes (just pastMorewood), it's free on weekends. So directions, from 376 east takeOakland exit to Forbes, from the west/south Squirrel Hill Exit toMurray and left onto Forbes. We will await better specifics for finding the site, but please plan on being at our Barony's "more activities, shorter announcements" new meeting! Come for an afternoon of merriment, meeting, fighting and dancing! Starting at 1pm this Sunday in our castle, we will have some light fare and drinks, dancing instruction in the Great Hall, a brief Barony meeting and Officers' meeting, and heavy weapons fighting in the basement (instead of the just-begun Economy Grange location). We will end around 4 pm. Please bring handwork projects if you like and be ready to show curious gentles what you are doing. No garb is needed. Do you know someone who has not yet been to an event but has shown interest? This would be an excellent, low-key opportunity to show them some activities we do. Directions: You may always mapquest 755 Stonegate Drive, Wexford PA 15090; this works well. >From the south/Pittburgh area: Take your best route to I-79 North and exit at the Wexford exit. Stay in the middle lane on the exit ramp which will be turning right at the light for Wexford-Bayne Rd. Make that right turn and stay in a middle lane for the almost immediate light for Brandt School Rd so that you go straight and stay on Wexford-Bayne Rd/Rte 910. Go a short distance to the Rite Aide drug store on your left and the light for Mingo Rd. Turn left on Mingo Rd. Go 1.1 miles and look for Stonegate Drive on your left. We are the 2nd house on the left on Stonegate Dr. Please call us with any questions: Byron and Ariella (mka Char and Cara) at 724 933 4661 or email at caram at pitt.edu. Hope to see you all there! No garb required but hopefully we might have some other things to show CMU students. Please bring handwork, good shoes for dancing, or whatever else you like to do. While we generally view it as being Jan 1, there are many others, depending on their culture, and on whether their calendar is solar or lunar based. For example, the most visible alternate one many of us are familiar with is the Chinese New Year, which is a lunar based date which is between Jan 21 and Feb 21. For the Jewish calendar, which is also lunar based, the holiday still observed is Rosh Hashanah, which occurs during the fall. Then there is the Celtic festival of Samhain, which my persona would have observed. While solar based, it is a mid-season day, which lies at the midpoint between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice. Now, more in keeping with what I suspect you were looking for, look into things such as Yule and 12th Night. While also tied to the winter solstice, these would be the holidays traditionally promoted by the Catholic Church in period. If you want, we can discuss this in more detail tomorrow at the meeting. - Cinn Quoting Jeff Hoskinson (jeffhos at eclecsia.org): > Does anyone have any information or references for ways the New Year > was celebrated in the middle ages? > > Thanks, > -- Cai > _______________________________________________ > Sca-bmdl mailing list > Sca-bmdl at lists.andrew.cmu.edu > https://lists.andrew.cmu.edu/mailman/listinfo/sca-bmdl From cbrasch475 at yahoo.com Sat Nov 22 17:10:31 2008 From: cbrasch475 at yahoo.com (Cheryl Brasch Ageless Fashions) Date: Sat, 22 Nov 2008 14:10:31 -0800 (PST) Subject: [SCA-BMDL] Medieval New Years celebrations et al In-Reply-To: <71542017-4D21-47C7-BF32-EBF9486D0272@eclecsia.org> Message-ID: <610923.49100.qm@web110014.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> http://www.infoplease.com/spot/newyearhistory.html ?
