I informed our throwers that I aim to run practice every other week. However, it was brought to my attention that Sunday, May 11th is Mother's Day. Thus, there will be no thrown weapons practice on Sunday, May 11th, per my mother. :) So...the weather is looking promising for THIS Sunday, May 4th. So, I'll be at the Washington site from 11 - 1 ish on the 4th. Also, Sunday, May 18th is War Practice...so no thrown weapons practice that day. But, Memorial Weekend is open for me! So, I can be at the Washington site on Sunday, May 25th. That is the current outlook for May. I'll try to send reminders closer to practice dates. I am proud to announce that on Thursday, May 8th, at 5pm, in the Alumni Concert Hall on CMU's campus (Fine Arts Bldg), David Yeager will be giving his master's recital on tuba. He asked me to compose a new solo for him, and so I wrote "Dans Profundo" for solo tuba and piano accompaniment. My piece will kick off the second half of the recital, which will include music by Strauss, Persichetti, and others. Everyone is welcome, so if you've been wondering where all the new tuba music is (as I *know* you have), then please come for more tuba music than you've ever heard in one sitting, plus a world premiere! Hey, I heard from David that his teacher, the principal tubist for the Pittsburgh Symphony, really likes it, and wants a copy. C'mon out! Agincourt October 25th 2008 Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips, Straining upon the start. The game's afoot: Follow your spirit; and, upon this charge Cry 'God for Harry! England and Saint George!' Henry V, 3. 1 We invite one and all to join us for our third annual celebration of the feast of Saint Crispin! Our event is themed on the battle of Agincourt that was fought in northern France as part of the Hundred Years' War. The battle was fought on a rainy Saint Crispin?s Day, in 1415 between the English and Welsh army of King Henry V and the French army of King Charles VI. The many fights to be had throughout the day will sate Fighter and Fencers alike. For the fencers, your day will begin with a melee on an hourglass shaped field; you will later fight the Tavern Brawl as well as a Fencing Tourney. For the Heavy Fighters, you have many battles ahead of you, all with combat archery. The Heavy Tavern Brawl will take place in the afternoon, hand weapons only please. What a sad day this would be without archery, Archers won the Battle of Agincourt. Along with combat archery, we will hold an Archery Tournament and a Youth Archery Tournament. There will also be an opportunity to test the skills of Aethelmearc?s Archers against a fierce French Army. There will be plenty to do for the non-fighter as well. There will be an A&S competition with the theme being Leather working. We are also looking for kind gentles to hold classes throughout the day on topics relevant to the period. We would especially like to see classes on leather working in honor of St. Crispin. An amazing lunch and feast is being prepared as well by the very talented Odriana vander Brugghe, Odriana will be cooking a feast of 14th Century English cuisine. During feast we will have a Dueling Bards Competition, to entertain the crowd and all honored guests. Garb of the period is requested and will make the atmosphere more authentic, but of course not required. This grand event is to be held at the Dorseyville Volunteer Fire Department Social Hall, 100 Charles Street Dorseyville, PA 15238. The Site fee will be $10.00 of Off Board (Side board lunch included), and $17.00 On Board. Children ages 6-12 shall be half price and Wee Ones (5 and under) shall be free. The site opens at 9am and closes at 10pm. No pets inside the building except service animals. The site is wet, period containers please. We invite all to bring banners of their Family and Households to decorate the walls of the feast hall. Any questions regarding fighting please direct to Lord Morien McBain (Steve Vandevander; svandevander(at)hotmail.com). For feast restrictions or questions please contact Odriana vander Brugghe (Jenn Strobel; Odriana(at)gmail.com) at least 2 weeks prior to the event. Since my twenty-first birthday is about to celebrate its twenty-first birthday, you're all invited to join me at my home for an informal War Practice post-revel open house this Sunday, May 18. Katherine will be out of town at a conference, so shh! Maybe she won't find out I'm inviting the whole world to drop by and hang out while she's gone. I'll provide the chips and beer, maybe a pot of chili, and pizza can happen later. Anyone wishing to contribute to the munchables is welcome, but no one has to bring a blessed thing except themselves (and please, your company is gift enough). Associative coolness is in effect. Folks are welcome to start arriving around 1:00 (come earlier if you like, but you might get drafted to help me clean), and I probably won't throw everyone out until some time after midnight, so come by whenever you like. If you can let me know that you're coming so I can have an idea of how many to expect, wonderful. If not, no sweat. I have a few games, but anyone wanting play something (including musical instruments!) is welcome to bring it. My address is 8012 Westmoreland Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15218. More specific directions follow: >From Cooper's Lake, head south on I-79. Take exit 72 on the left side of the highway to 279-South As you approach Pittsburgh (you will see the downtown buildings between the hills), take the exit for 579/Veterans Bridge. On the bridge, take the left fork toward 376/Boulevard of the Allies/Oakland. Stay to the right after the fork. VERY shortly thereafter, exit to the right onto Boulevard of the Allies. The road will curve to the left, and you will find yourself driving along a cliff. Construction will force you to merge into one lane and exit onto 376. Stay on 376 past the Squirrel Hill exit, and go through the Squirrel Hill Tunnel. Take the first exit after the tunnel, Edgewood/Swissvale. Bear to the right at the fork, toward Swissvale. At the stop sign, turn left. The road will shortly end in a "T" at another stop sign; turn right onto South Braddock Avenue. You will pass under a railroad overpass. Turn left at the second traffic light after that, onto Westmoreland Avenue. Pass four stop signs. WARNING: Traffic coming from the left at Columbia does not stop! After the fourth stop sign, pass Lacrosse. My house is on the next block, on the right. Look for the red and white porch. "Help, I'm lost!" number: 412-656-7557. Heck no. If anything, I'd rather see the equivalent of a mostly A&S issue with lots of articles and photos and illustrations. You could skip the event announcements as far as I'm concerned, or at least truncate them and just link to the websites'announcements. Having said that, I will dig through my files and send you some articles. :-) Arianna Ann Kopchik wrote: Two people have requested hard copies. Half the time, I get event announcements by culling through posts on the AE list or by hunting down the information on other groups websites. If a pretty version of The Althing isn't wanted or is found to be annoying by the populous, I can just produce something in text. Or maybe just a list of links to information on the web so you can make your build your own newsletter. I'm open to suggestions. -Ann On May 22, 2008, at 7:41 PM, Dani Zweig wrote: > The information and announcements that were the raison d'etre of the > althing may be found on the Baronial web site. Is there anything in Kingdom Law that says the chronicler has to publish a formal newsletter? That is could the chronicler be the webmaster and keeping an update to day web page with event announcements, officer's reports, etc satisfy Kingdom Law? Then the Althing might morph into what ever we would like (for example, quarterly or semi-annual A&S focused publication). For that, I would be interested in seeing it go back to paper form. (There's a long standing debate on how web ministers and chroniclers are related.) Also hard copy versions must be supplied to any who ask. Personally, I like the idea of a quarterly newsletter that features more A&S content. It's long been the habit of chroniclers in this barony to gather material from the kingdom and barony lists. Changing the Althing's focus to more educational articles might be what the Althing needs to differentiate itself and attract more readers. Are there any statistics on how many people download the Althing from the website each month? I think this is an excellent idea (although I would expand to, perhaps, bi-monthly if possible). The A&S articles can later be converted to articles on the website, or indexed with links. Personally, I only use the Althing these days when I have to look up someone's phone number (and that's because I never got into the Dark Pages habit). Of course, it would also be nice if you attend and bring 100 people. Over the years the roster of co-sponsors hass grown and always included my home town Barony along with the royalty of the Aethel, East, Mid, and Atlantia. This year I also expect to be co-sponsored by the Board of Directors of the SCA as well. The event is published in the Pennsic paper and will prominently (hopefully) include a refernce to the Barony. We wanted to forward an estimable request from the leader of the Tuchux, Kobar, to list our Barony as a co-sponsor of their Charity tournament. We do want the Barony to be listed and will try to fight in the tournament (schedule permitting), as well as donating personal funds to this worthy cause. The tournament is scheduled for Tuesday August 7th on the East Battlefield of Pennsic from 2-8pm. In Service, Ariella and Byron ----- Original Message ----- From: John G. Harshman To: 'caram at pitt.edu' Sent: Friday, May 30, 2008 5:19 PM Subject: Pennsic My name is Kobar and I am the leader of the Tuchux. I write to invite you to be listed as co-sponsors in this year's Tuchux charity tournament for the benenfit of the S.B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Please take a moment to drop me a note and I will include the Barony on the roster of co-sponsors to be advertised in the paper. Your co-sponsorship would likely encourage some of our local members to attend and donate to this worthy cause. Nothing else will be expected of you other that the use of the Barony's name. I really appreciated your hospitality at the castle event and hoped you enjoyed my gift of wine and brandy. I also enjoyed exchanging blows on the field at AWP. Please feel free to contact me directly should you have any questions. Thank you for your attention.
