(I did attend Pennsics 33 and 37, a few events in Atlantia, the Outlands, and I believe Atenveld [estrella wars] over the past 4 years). Over the next few months you will most likely find myself and my lady, Michelle, at dance practice (something my lady and I would like to do together), scribal guild meetings (something I've been itching to try my hand at), and fencing practice (I haven't fenced in a couple of years, but wouldn't mind knocking the rust off). My work schedule currently precludes my participation in fencing practice on Sundays at the Washington Blvd. site, however I heard there is a fencing practice on Tuesdays as well? Can someone be so kind as to provide me with some additional information as to where and when these take place? I am also very interested in getting into costuming with a desire to make garb that is actually period. My persona is late 14th, early 15th C. French. I am, at best, a beginning sewer and would welcome the advice and assistance of someone within the Barony that may be willing to lend their expertise and advise to someone willing to learn the craft. All of the base information for practices is on the meetings page - http://www.debatablelands.org/meetings.html - and emailing the relevant gentles responsible for those activities usually gets a fairly prompt response. Information on locations, times, contact info, &c for all local martial practices are online on the Baronial Marshallate web page - http://www.dementia.org/~djl/sca/bmdl/marshal/marshal.html I don't think there is currently a Tuesday night fencing practice, but if there's enough interest, I'm sure that Lord Charles - the baronial Captain of Fence - will do everything in his power to start it up again, at least until it's too dark / cold to do so. > I am also very interested in getting into costuming with a desire to > make garb that is actually period.??My persona?is?late 14th, early > 15th C. I don't think that Sewing Circle meets very regularly these days, but if you contact Mistress Ts'vee'a via the link on the meetings page - http://www.debatablelands.org/meetings.html - I'm sure she'll help as much as she can. In addition, there are many people around here who are quite knowledegable and I'm sure would be glad to help, though not necessarily within the specific context of Sewing Circle (scheduling conflicts can be a bear) > I am sure I speak for my lady as well?when i say that we look forward > to meeting the good people of this?area and sharing our interest in > the middle ages with you all.? > ? > In Service to the Dream, > ? > Lord Guillaume Jean-Pierre de Mortain Sir Koredono P.S. My name is Guillaume Jean-Pierre de Mortain (mka William Huey) and although I have been present within your borders for some 4 years now, I must admit that I have not been active at the local level. I am sure I speak for my lady as well when i say that we look forward to meeting the good people of this area and sharing our interest in the middle ages with you all. This month, August, we will meet on the *fourth* Wednesday due to family commitments on the regular night. So, Wednesday, August 27, there will be a sewing circle from 8-10pm at the home of Ts'vee'a bas Tseepora Levi (Gail Lefkowitz), at 5167 Rosecrest Drive, Pittsburgh, 15201. If you would like to attend, feel free to contact me for directions, or so that I can be prepared for whatever help you require. Experienced costumers are also welcome to come and work on projects - perhaps new clothes for Coronation or a jump-start on Twelfth Night finery? I don't yet play any period instruments, although I'm eagerly awaiting the construction of a hurdy gurdy, which should be done sometime this winter. I'm also hoping to try out the fighting. I don't have any armor, and have so far only watched, but I'll stop by the Washington Blvd site in the next few weeks and introduce myself. I would not presume to speak for my wife (a dangerous practice), but she is a talented seamstress, a lovely singer, graceful dancer and all around enthusiastic person. I've forwarded along some of these notes to her also. My daughter is 9, and shares many of the craft interests with her mother. She also started shooting archery at Pennsic this year, and I'm hoping there are opportunities for her to continue here at home. Anyway, I'm just delighted to be seeing so much activity, and look forward to meeting everyone soon. We've gone to Pennsic for several years, but that's the extent of my involvement and understanding of SCA. I've felt like I'm missing something , as wonderful as that event is. It might be helpful if you gave us an idea of what particular craft or activity interests you have, if any, so that in addition to general involvement at Barony Meeting and events you also can connect with those who share your specific interests. Ours is a very active Barony, with many regular meetings and practices for those with shared interests; the list includes (in no particular order) dance, instrumental music, choir singing, brewing, fighting, fencing, archery, thrown weapons, costuming, ornamental stitchery, other performing arts, materials crafting (e.g., leather, wood, metal), cookery, calligraphy and illumination, and bookbinding. I'm sure others can throw even more possibilities your way with but little effort. Depending on your exact interests in music, both vocal and instrumental, you may also want to consider checking out the Debatable Choir (Monday evenings from ~7:30 - ~9 pm at Mistress Ts'vee'a's house) and/or the Debatable Consort (Thursday evenings from ~7 - 9 pm at CMU, immediately before Dance Practice, but is on hiatus until September). > I'm also hoping to try out the fighting. Their Excellencies opened court with a moment of silence to remember all those whose friends and families had passed away during the past year since the last War. They did also ask that our thoughts and prayers go out to those among who could not be at the war due to health concerns. The Baron and Baroness had heard a tale that Master Gwilym o'r Tair Afon had come into possession of a relic of sorts that he needed gift. They did invite him forward and he asked that he be joined by Lord Charles de Cayeux. Master Gwilym did then produce a tabard which he had held for many a year, and told its tale. This tabard was given to him decades ago when he was the Regional Fencing Marshal for the Kingdom of the East, in fact he was the first Fencing Marshal ever in this region. He then gifted the tabard to Lord Charles as he is the current Marshal of Fence in the Barony-Marche. Byron and Ariella next called for the attendance of Their Heavy Weapons Champion Lord Gabriel Hawkes. They said to him that a fighter in his station requires a sturdy blade to up hold the peace of the Barony and with which to protect the personage of Her Excellency, and they did invest him with new regalia in the form of a sword that he and the future champions might hold it in defense of our fair lands. Their Excellencies invited Jake of the Debatable Lands before them. They spoke kind words to Jake thanking him for all of his service to the Baronial camp at Pennsic, and Pennsics past, for his valiant skills at Youth Combat, and for further teacher youth combat to others who wished to learn. So They awarded him a Comet Purpure on this day, Scroll by THLady Allesandra d'Avignon. The Baron and Baroness next invited Lady Margretha La Fauvelle to enter Their Court. They spoke many words of praise of the artistic accomplishments of this fine lady, her participation in the Debatable Choir and Debatable Consort, for playing music for courts and acting as the Arts and Sciences Minister of the Barony and so they awarded her a Comet Azure-Argent for these endeavors, Scroll by Hrefna Fruthekona. Lady Rosalia Iuliana Andere was next called before Their Excellencies. They noted that her prowess on the field of combat had become well known, she made her Knight proud by venturing to far off lands to gain glory for the Barony, and They awarded her a Comet Gules for all her accomplishments of the field of valor, Scroll by THLady Allesandra d'Avignon. Their Excellencies did spy in the back of the crowd a familiar face in Her Excellency Ardis Bluemantel, They invited her to come closer and reminded her that they had not forgotten about her gift to Them at the last Pennsic War. However They wished to address a different matter this day, They reminded her that she had often been spied int he kitchens of late, and that her skills there in were well known to many in the barony, so well known that Their Excellencies had no choice but to award her a Comet Or, Scroll by Lady Lara Sukhadrev. The Baron and Baroness being struck by an odd mood then demanded the presence of the Comedia Del Arte Troupe I Genesii. They noted that the troupe had been a landmark of entertainment at the War and oft times at the local events within the barony as the Greatest Comedia Troupe in the World. I Genesii had rightfully earned a reputation of putting on a smart funny and period show and so They rewarded the Troupe I Genesii with the Award of the Comet Azure-Argent and did further confirm the award upon its members THLord Brandubh O'Donnghaile, THLord Cadell Blaidd du, Lady Catriona MacKinnon, Lord Charles de Cayeux, Lord Clement de Warrewyk, Lord Clewin Kupferhelbelinc, THLady Hilderun Hugelmann, Lord Pavel Dudoladov, and THLady Roana d'Evreux, Scroll by the Hand of Countess Aidan ni Lier. Bonhethwyr Cinnion map Liuelin map Higuel had previously begged for a moment of time in Their Excellencys' court and They invited him forward at this time to take it. Lord Cinnion proclaimed himself to have a reputation as a practical joker, but what he had to say today was no laughing matter. He asked if Lady Caitriona inghean ui Bhraonain would join him before all assembled. He then dropped to one knee and produced a ring which he explained was a hole in his heart which he would most fervently wish her to fill as his wife. Lady Cat through hers tears did reply that yes she would marry him. The Baron and Baroness then looked upon the crowd and saw that it was good, they thanked all those who had worked so hard to put on the reception, the Cooks, the brewers, the set up crew, the clean up crew and many others for without them the party would not have happened. There being no further business before Them, the Court of Their Excellencies was closed. My return to reality was a bit crazier than anticipated and I am finally able to sit down and write this out. There were a number of components to this year's dinner that made for a wonderful evening of socializing and recognition beyond what we have experienced previously. It also provided the opportunity for more people to be involved in serving the Barony, and the Kingdom. There was my fabulous prep/hauling/setup/cleanup crew; Sandy, Jacob of the Debatable Lands, Alethia Cowle, Lady Catriona MacKinnon, Joslyn, and Donovan. They all stepped up above and beyond. Lady Catriona was also my town run partner, for which I am greatly appreciative. There were also a number of people that donated food; Lady Helewys Spynnre, Do?a Illadore de Bedegrayne, THL Michelina Cenomani da Trento, and THL Rufina Saavedra. This list is not entirely comprehensive and I apologize for anyone that I may have missed. I did not write everything down the day of and hope that you can forgive me for any oversight if I forgot your name. You are appreciated, I am just forgetful. I would especially like to thank Her Excellency Mistress Arianna of Wynthrope, who took care of coordinating the additional food donations. Therefore, I'd like to remind everyone that the point of attending the activities fair is to help with recruitment. To that end we need to put our best face forward, our best face for attracting young college students to our wonderful and varied organization. I'd suggest everyone who plans on attending wear their best garb(or at least most eye-catching/flattering), wear their best armor, bring their best example of their craft, or come prepared to show off the best of their skill at fighting or performing. Also, more to the point everyone who attends should be prepared to talk to college students and not only be able to explain what they personally like to do, but more importantly ask the incoming students what they are interested in and point them in the right direction. For example, oh you like playing instruments we have an instrumental group that meets weekly and practices and performs medieval and renaissance music on Thursday evenings on the CMU campus. If you don't know that much about a students field of interest refer them to someone else at the demo, show off the best feature of the SCA that we have many people with many different interests that support eachother and their interests and form a wonderful community. I do not intend to discourage turnout with this message. I would just like to see us do the best job we can at recruiting new members. In service, Pavel Dudoladov (Paul Warlop - CMU Alum. For example, at about 4 this morning I got to see a post that was sent out *two days* ago (I had already seen the responses). I sent the ISP the complete header (which seems to include the fact that the mail had bounced on at least one previous occasion). If this was snail mail I would know what to do (go straight to my friendly local postal inspector, just like I wound up doing when Milpitas and the PO were pointing fingers at each other about my newsletters and TI issues).
